In these troubling and uncertain times connection is very important and I have expended a lot of additional effort in doing so in my role as a leader at work, within my family, friends group and probably most importantly within my relationship with my wife Faith.
I won't go into it all here, but we saw the importance of communicating more effectively, in blocking out the noise that so often accompanies life, and in finding the room, physically and emotionally, to connect. I believe it has helped us maintain a positive outlook, affect the changes we have had to implement and to nurture our close and deeply passionate relationship together, one that has been thirty three years in the making.
We do this all the time of course, however this year it's taken on a new meaning, possibly greater importance, and we've worked a lot harder at it, kept a close eye on one another and focused firmly on togetherness. I know, it all sounds a little touchy-feely right? Well, I don't care, it's a strength of our relationship and it works for us; I'm also comfortable within myself to express my feelings...That's a strength not a weakness.
I was prompted to write about this today as I received my song of the month from Faith and I realised it had been a long time since I'd shared one with you. If you're shrugging your shoulders wondering what the song of the month is then keep reading.

For years Faith and I have sent each other a song each month by text message. I can't recall when we started doing this but it was a long time ago. It's a simple thing and doesn't require much effort at all..We just pick a song and send it.
Sometimes the song relates to a particular thing the other has said or done,or wants to do, sometimes it's a prompt for an event of some sort and at other times it's just designed to motivate, uplift, be cheeky, funny or whatever...It's just an opportunity to say something to the other, convey a feeling or emotion, through music.
Here's the track she sent me today called If I ain't got you by Alicia Keys. It's a nice track, sort of a ballad I guess, and a nice little message to get from my wife. I haven't sent mine yet, I guess I wanted to see how the month unfolds before I made a choice, but I'm happy with what Faith sent. Cuddles will be deployed when she gets home.
Like the song alludes to, Faith and I don't really need much except togetherness...The rest just falls into place from there. We don't know what works for others, but stuff like this works for us; Just like hiking, picnics and laying in the sun in a remote country area or cuddles on the couch watching Netflix does, nights around the fire pit...Simple stuff... It's the connection, the togetherness, that matters.
I have a mate, a military guy, who after twenty seven years still places a hand-written note somewhere his wife will find it during her work day...Every week without fail. It's kind of nice right? It's sort of like Faith and my music thing and is just another way of nurturing his relationship. Loads of people I know do stuff like this...And so many don't...So, how about you?
I'm interested to know if you guys have similar rituals between you and your significant other. How do you maintain togetherness, nurture the passion and emotion between you...And if you have no partner what track would you say defines August for you? Drop a comment 馃憞 down there. I'll reply.
