The superior man thinks always of virtue; the common man thinks of comfort.
- Confucius -
If I'm to believe Confucius, I'm a common man, because yesterday I thought not of virtue, but of comfort; the comfort of a cup of coffee at least. I found it too, the one in the image above, and I felt comforted. Does coffee's power know no bounds? I don't know because I'm common, not superior, according to Confucius.
I had a date with a lovely young lady I call Klingy yesterday morning; she's my dentist and an all-round top sort.
I was scheduled to have the second stage of my root canal procedure done and spent seventy five minutes with my mouth open as wide as humanly possible whilst she stuck drills and hand-operated and drill-operated files, into the four root-canals of the offending tooth. It was all in a bid to clean them out and shape them ready to accept the wedges that will be inserted in about six weeks at the final stage of the process. The tooth will be capped off at that stage and in six months a determination will be made as to whether it will need a crown.
I'll admit, it wasn't a nice date, although Klingy, [a legit cool gal], made it as pain free as possible with a couple anaesthetic needles, one of which went straight into the roof of my mouth.
"Now, just a little pinch here G-dog," she said and yep, no fucken shit! It hurt like hell. But soon the anaesthetic did it's job and numbed me up pretty well.
I'm used to the drilling and grinding noises by now and, due to feeling no pain, was pretty comfortable the whole way through. The worst part was having my mouth open for so long although Klingy gave me a pretty good jaw-massage afterwards which was most welcome.
Overall the appointment wasn't too painful...It hurt like hell in the wallet department of course; dentists aren't cheap here. As far as physical pain goes though, it was ok. She chatters away as she works, sings to the tunes on the radio and asks me loads of questions about things, none of which I can actually answer because I have a mouth full of drills and her hands! I survived though, who his fortuitous.
After I made my next appointment, handed over my entire life's savings to the receptionist and gave Dr. Klingy a hug I left feeling pretty sorry for myself; I was not in pain but knew it was coming. I needed some comforting and figured a coffee would be a nice way to find that comfort.
I hit a café and ordered a coffee which sounded much like this:
"Mayb I bwave a cwupb bwov bwoffeeb pbease." The left side of my face wasn't working so well and that was the best I could do.
The girl behind the counter looked at me a little lot strangely. I wasn't sure if it was the way I spoke or the fact I was dribbling from the left side of my mouth that inspired the look; both probably.
"What?" She said this with disgust written all over her face.
"Mayb...I...bwave...a...cwupb...bwov...bwoffeeb...pbease." I spoke slowly and as clearly as possible, and comprehension dawned on her face.
"What type? She said this flatly and with more barely contained disgust.
Forpb fbucbs sakeb, I thought to myself, but responded with, "flabt whibt." She nodded and mumbled an almost imperceptible, ah ha."
I flashed what I hoped was a non-dribbly smile, paid and found a table at which to await my flabt whibt. My flat white coffee.
I stayed a while, drank my coffee [dribbled some down the cup and onto my shirt], didn't get to eat my little cookie because my tooth thing, read my book and right before leaving began to get that tingly sensation on the left side of my face as the anaesthetic began to wear off. Right about then I buggered off home as my whole head started to hurt.
I didn't sleep so well last night, despite taking pain killers, but I'm a little better today and managed to get through my work day reasonably easily.
I'm not looking forward to the next appointment but in truth it's probably not going to be too much more difficult than the last two. I'll get a coffee afterwards again I think but I'll wear a darker shirt so the coffee-dribble-stains don't show up as much.
