Hello dear book lovers.

Hola queridos amantes de los libros.

Incest is a subject that continues to be taboo in modern society, both because it is prohibited and because of the legal nature that some of these situations may involve, such as sexual abuse. I could not say that the books that touch on these topics are my favorites, but I try to analyze the context in which the scene of blood and love is shown on a tray of grima. One of the best known cases in literature is One Hundred Years of Solitude, by the Nobel Prize winner Gabriel García Márquez. However, Gabo has not been the only one to explore these undue ties, as "Flowers in the Attic" by the writer V.C. Andrews shows us, under the link of romance, a story where incest is the most reckless escape from love and family.

The plot, narrated from the chronological perspective of Catherine –Cathy- Dollanganger, narrates the pubic romance where paper flowers are witnesses of a forbidden love between two brothers. It is after the death of her father that Cathy, her mother Corinne, and her siblings seek support from Olivia Foxworth, the family's grandmother whose religious cruelty goes beyond limits. Forced by her mother and the possibility of rebuilding her life, Corinne decides to put her children aside in an attic to meet a new man capable of indulging all her luxuries. With no obvious alternative, Cathy and her brother Christopher take care of their younger siblings in the attic confinement that her mother Corinne and grandmother Olivia have sentenced for them. Between sexual awakening and lack of affection, both Cathy and Christopher begin to share a bond that goes beyond sisterhood, discovering that their family past is darker than they realize.

Flowers in the Attic is a dark romance, as it presents the torment of two brothers who love each other because of the pain and poison that their own mother has imposed on them under the enigma of sin and forbidden relationships. They were two lost children, with longing for loss in their hearts; in this sense, what unites them is the need to be loved and reciprocated in the gloomy scene of loneliness. This is how V. C. Andrews supports her work, with a message that speaks of greed and indifference as the true result of the undue, the dark and the unforgivable. But, at the bottom of the trunk of darkness, a small light radiates, and that is where the reason for difficult situations is understood as the letters of the alphabet.

In this novel, the trigger is the ability to "judge" without understanding the one who is sentenced. It is the very circumstance of the world that pushes us to unthinkable places, where reason takes a back seat and despair is stronger than any law or reason. Love then becomes a tool to consent to everything, a form of escape from the confused feelings of the soul and spirit. This is how incest is conceived, under the erroneous idea of sexuality and the premise of justifiable loneliness. V.C. Andrews weaves each phrase through this conception, which unlike One Hundred Years of Solitude, takes on a much more controversial message.

With simple but beautiful prose, Flowers in the Attic provides its readers with an entertaining, fluid story with enough twists and turns to keep reading to the last paragraph. The first-person narration allows us to connect more with Cathy's emotions, giving us a mind-boggling array of feelings. I could say that the only thing that I did not like was the scene of wealth and elegant classes, somewhat cliché for my taste but well managed. It is a book that I recommend if you are a lover of these dark themes but mature enough to explain that the heart and recklessness are an escape from loneliness.

Virginia Cleo Andrews is an American writer who was dedicated to the romantic genre from the beginning of it. Her controversial works of forbidden love and her unthinkable relationships led her to the top of sales, a fact that popularized her series of novels titled "Dollanganger Saga", in which she shows the incestuous ties of two. family generations. Such was the success of said writer, that after her death in 1965, her stories continued with the hand of writer Andrew Neiderman, who since then has played the role of continuing with her stories under the pseudonym of the facellida author. However, as might be expected, Neiderman's style and creative ability, while similar to Andrews's, differ in many respects; so these works lack the spark that characterized the original works.
