It was Saturday. Saturday night. (Actually, Sunday had already begun.) The freezing nights were now behind us. Although it wasn’t warm, the weather encouraged me to venture out of my cave with greater confidence.
I was home alone, as I usually am. I was going to text some friends to get together and spend some time with them, but an hour went by and I had second thoughts. I had second thoughts about everything: my own desire to go, the time of day, the plan itself, and the remote possibilities that kept spinning round in my mind.
I like being home on my own. Although sometimes I feel the need for a group hug or to ease the loneliness when it becomes overwhelming. A bit of everything.
A little more time passed. I didn’t time it; it just passed. And then some more.
I played the guitar for a bit, played Scrabble on my phone, and suddenly an impulse took hold of me. I didn’t time that either; it just happened. I grabbed a coat, my personal belongings, and headed out onto the street towards the bar.
It was around 2 am when I arrived. Perhaps the perfect time. There weren’t many people there, but there was a group of acquaintances and two of the friends I’d thought about messaging earlier that day.
In this town, there are few places open at that time of night, and they’re generally aimed at a younger crowd, with loud music and a cold, hybrid décor.
The bar we usually go to is a house with a very distinctive garden. You usually hear rock music; sometimes live bands play; there’s delicious home-cooked food, a pool table, beers, a few classic drinks, tables and chairs inside and out, and lots and lots and lots of bits and bobs everywhere.
Sometimes, when it’s cold, a fire is lit outside and we sit round it chatting whilst we feed it with logs.
We share drinks and chat, chat and drinks. Until the idea came up to change venues and head to someone’s house to carry on, but adding instruments to the conversation and conversation to the instruments.
It must have been around 4 in the morning when we were still there singing, with a piano and an electric guitar playing. Drinking in the conversation, listening to the drinks.
Time flew by and before I knew it, I was walking home as the sun was rising. The drinks and conversations kept swirling round on a different plane. Solitude was slowly settling back in.
Now I’m writing this, alone at home. There are no drinks and the conversation is with myself. I like being alone, talking to myself, writing on my own, and I like the impulses that lead me into the uncertainty of encounters.
Cheers 🍷

Compartimos tragos y charla, charla y tragos.
