Protein Or Carbs For Breakfast?

Although I have told many people over and over, starving yourself will not help you lose weight, they still continue to do so. It is a huge misconception for many, many people that skipping meals will lower your caloric intake and then you will lose weight but that could not be further from the truth. Your body will go into starvation mode without enough food and you will actually gain weight. I know this to be so true as years ago I also believed this misconception and gained over 50 pounds.
I believe you should eat when you are hungry. If you wake up in the morning and aren’t eat when you are. We are going to discuss breakfast options and why some are so much better for you than others. The “typical” American breakfast consisting of a bagel or cereal or pancakes or waffles and toast is not your best choice.
First of all breakfast cereal are not only highly processed, they also contain lots of added sugar, very little fiber and refined carbs. The labels are very misleading please learn to be a label reader. When you eat these types of food it will cause your blood sugar to spike. You see your body has to produce insulin to turn your food into glucose then glycogen which is used by every cell in your body and when you eat more carbs than it can produce insulin for it is turned into fat. A few hours later you will crash then be hungry and this causes you to overeat. Obesity is now at an all time high and with it come a slew of changes to your body that is bad for you health. Too many carbohydrates, rather than giving you energy will make you feel sleepy. Because it is made from mostly refined grains, it is very low in protein and gives your body very little nutrition. Please remember advertisers jobs are to sell the product, don’t believe everything that they say.

All of the other carbohydrates that I mentioned will do the same thing to your body and your metabolism. Vending machine food will do the same thing. If it is made in a factory please refrain from eating it. In reality if you eat carbohydrates early in the day instead of helping you they will actually have a negative effect on you in both in fat burning and fat storing. You become lethargic.
High protein breakfasts is the best option and they are both delicious and nutritious. They will actually keep you fuller longer. What is a high quality protein for breakfast? It is a food in a natural form, eggs, unsweetened Greek yogurt, ricotta cheese, cottage cheese, salmon (yes even smoked), turkey, steak, you get it! These are great protein choices. A high protein breakfast will increase your metabolic rate which will help your body burn more fat throughout the day rather than store it. And low carbohydrate, high protein diets have been proven to help people lose weight.
Other breakfast options include, nuts, avocado or veggies. Try a Greek yogurt parfait layered with blueberries and nuts. Or an omelet with turkey and veggies sprinkled lightly with parmesan cheese skip the toast or bagel. You could even try a baked sweet potato or some quinoa.

Please stay away from fruit juices, they should be outlawed! And always eat your fruit with some protein, it will slow down that quick release of sugar and help you keep fuller longer. Although many people like protein shakes, I am not a big fan, I would rather chew my breakfast and I feel fuller when I do that . Vegetable shakes are better than fruit shakes. Remember a serving of fruit is one piece any more will spike your blood sugar and cause you to store fat.
So you may have to rethink breakfast but once you try proteins instead of refined carbohydrates you will be amazed at how alert you are and realize that you aren’t hungry all the time. And who knows, you may even lose some weight.
