Hola.
Hello. These days it's the birthday of a girl very close to me and they asked me for a detail of her favorite character: One Piece. Although I don't know much about the anime, I grabbed the basics: the skull and the main character (Luffy) to make their decoration. Here I'm going to show you how I did the step by step.
The idea
I wanted to make something special for the girl, so I decided to create two main figures: the characteristic One Piece skull and Luffy, the captain of the Straw Hat Pirates. All made of foam, with a lot of love and dedication.
| Materiales en español | Materials in English |
|---|---|
| Foami blanco | White foam |
| Foami negro | Black foam |
| Foami marrón (varios tonos) | Brown foam (various shades) |
| Foami rojo | Red foam |
| Témpera negra | Black tempera paint |
| Témpera marrón | Brown tempera paint |
| Témpera blanca | White tempera paint |
| Pegamento | Glue |
| Tijeras | Scissors |
| Papel para relleno | Paper for stuffing |
Step by step
The parchment
For the second model (Luffy), I used different shades of brown because I wanted to make something like a parchment. My style of creating is to draw directly on the foam, but for other people it's easier to sketch it on paper first. In my case, I prefer to go straight to the foam.
After cutting out the figure with different shades of brown, I tried to give it shape. ^(This was the result, it was still wet and needed to dry.)
Luffy's face
While the parchment was drying, I started working on Luffy's face.
- I started with a circle or oval for the face.
- Then I made his big smile and some big eyes.
- With black tempera I made the details of the eye circle and some lines on its sides.
- Same with the smile: a long line in the center with two "<" on its sides. ^(To make myself better understood, it can be shown in the image.)
The hair
Then, for the hair, I placed the face inside the black circle and guided myself by the length and the tips downwards that the hair would have. As I said before, I prefer to recreate on the foam as I go.
The hat
With a large brown foam I made the shape of a complete hat.
- I cut off the top part to make it separately. Why? Because I was going to make this part identical and stuff it with paper so it would look a little puffy, giving it more of the essence of a hat.
- On the bottom part (the largest one), with tempera paints in similar colors to those I used for the parchment (various shades of brown, white and black), I added details.
- With a dark brown foam I made two lines to glue on and give it a little more relief.
- With red foam I made the line that goes on the separation between the large shape of the hat and the small one I stuffed.
☠️ NOW LET'S GO WITH THE ONE PIECE SKULL DESIGN ☠️
Step by step
The initial drawing
First, I drew the skull figure on a notebook paper to have a guide. Then, I transferred it to a white foam and cut it out.
The hat
With yellow foam, I started making the characteristic One Piece hat:
- First, I made a yellow line which is the first part of the hat.
- Then, with another piece of yellow foam, I made a small line and a semicircle to complete the hat figure. ^(This process will be better detailed in the images.)
The face details
With black foam, I made the main details of the skull:
- The two eyes.
- The nose.
Then, with black tempera, I marked:
- The smile lines.
- More lines all over the skull figure to make it look even more like the original design.
The black background and firmness
Once I had the skull ready, I transferred it to a large black foam, glued it and then cut out the whole figure. This gave it a little more hardness and firmness to the design, as well as a better finish.
Final result
This skull model is much easier to make than the Luffy one. This was the final result of the skull, and together with the Luffy design, I now have both designs complete for the birthday decoration.
