Although there are many Simpsons games I have played only two in a lifetime, one of the fighting genre that came out for the PlayStation 1 and the one I will talk about next, although thinking about it I think I have played another one, but at this moment I really do not remember if it is the one I will talk about today or is another one, I have to review it well, because I have very confused memories, in any case, the game I will talk about today is one that is not simply a game of the platform genre, but it is a game that has several games, from side scroll, to even shoot'em up and beat'em up, so it turns out to be a fairly broad game as far as genres are concerned, it is not a spectacular game, but it fulfills its purpose. So without further ado.
Today's Retro Review is about: The Simpsons: Bart's Nightmare.
The game starts with Bart doing his homework, but quickly falls asleep, when he falls asleep he enters a dream world where he sees the leaves of the homework he was doing flying out the window of his room, so in such a situation, Bart decides to go out the window and go in search of his homework. Which will be scattered around the city, having to recover them in a world, which like all dreams, are quite imaginative and totally crazy things happen, in these dreams we will see Bar turned into Godzilla, in his alter-ego "Bartman" and among other totally strange situations that can only occur in a dream or in this case, in a nightmare. A simple story, but entertaining, it gets to the point from the beginning and does not bore with sub-plots or anything else that is out of place.
Undoubtedly the graphical aspect of The Simpsons: Bart's Nightmare is the best of this game, because in terms of the color palette is an extremely striking game, manages to emulate quite well the old animation style of the animated series, that style of the 90s so characteristic, unique and most representative of the most famous family of television. We will be able to see an excellent representation of the city, all its elements, scenery and features are very well done, which shows that at least in the graphic aspect the developers knew what they were doing and especially knew the product from which they were adapting. Because we are in a nightmare of Bart, many of the situations are totally out of control and we will see things never seen before in the regular episodes of the series, we will see totally different versions of classic characters or doing totally strange and crazy things, things that we could easily see in a dream or nightmare, being this the main theme of this game. The animations of the characters, especially those of Bart are very good, they transmit very well the expressiveness of the characters and manage to emulate very well their versions of the animated series, undoubtedly its graphic aspect is what stands out the most in this video game.
While its soundtrack is not bad, I think it is a bit boring and in many moments does not convey very well the situation in which we find ourselves, plus many of them come to repeat a lot throughout the same level, so it becomes a bit boring to listen to despite its musical variety, which is decent, but as I said before, it is repetitive. Its sound effects are fine, they fulfill their purpose, but they are nothing to write home about, without a doubt its best aspect and the one that makes this game stand out, as I said before, is its graphic aspect. The Simpsons: Bart's Nightmare is a game that not only belongs to the genre of side scroll and even the platformer, but also and according to certain aspects, the game will completely change genre, becoming even a game of the shoot'em up genre. When we enter the dream or nightmare, we will be in a kind of lobby, so to speak, in which we can move laterally, both left and right, in this "lobby" we can find different obstacles represented by characters from the animated series, classic objects that in this world come to have their own life and other elements that will be quite familiar to those who have seen the series.
As I said before, when we are in this kind of "lobby", besides dodging the obstacles that we find in our way, our main priority is to find the leaves of the task that Bart was doing, when we find any of these hours the game will give us a choice between two options, which are represented by doors, By choosing either of the two we will enter a kind of mini-game which can be of any genre, from shoot'em up, beat'em up, a mini-game where Bart becomes Godzilla and must go through the city and destroy it, and then climb a building and get to the top and fight with Homer's version of King Kong. In other levels Bart will become Bartman and this will be a shoot'em up level in which we must go flying through the sky. The truth is that this game in terms of variety of things to do is quite striking and wide, so the fun is 100% guaranteed.
