Continuing and ending with these three consecutive reviews of video games based on the "firefighter genre", this time I bring a game that is quite similar to the previous The Firemen, but the one I'm going to talk about maintains a little more "mature and serious" aesthetics than the previous games, including Burning Rangers, but like the other two still maintains the basic feature of going through scenarios, rescuing civilians and extinguish the fire that we find. And although there are several other games with similar themes to this one, I think that at least for now this will be the last video game of the "firefighter genre" that I will make, but possibly in some time I will make another one, since I do not want to saturate my content of the same genre of video games. And although in terms of gameplay and things to do this particular game is not too far away from The Firemen, what caught my attention the most about the game I'm going to talk about today is that unlike the previous two this one has a much more serious appearance, considering that it is a game for SNES.
That's why today's Retro Review is about: The Ignition Factor.
Unlike the other games in The Ignition Factor we will not have a story itself, since our main objective is to go into buildings, houses and some place where there is fire and we must put it out at the same time to save those people who are in danger, so we will not have a plot itself that lets us know the story of our main character. As a good group of firefighters we will have the help of our work team which will provide us with both guides to enter the places where we have to do our work, which through the radio we will communicate the situation in which the building is, also we will also be of great help by providing us with different items that will allow us to perform our work much more efficiently. And although I mentioned before that this game does not have a plot that puts us in a situation other than controlling a firefighter who will be in charge of saving civilians and extinguishing fires, The Ignition Factor has something quite particular and curious and is that through some dialogues that will make both our main character and some others, it is implied that "they know" that they are in a video game, since from time to time they will say certain things related to this that I just mentioned, thus giving a small humorous touch, which I did not expect at all.
In the graphical aspect is a game that is not bad at all and although its first scenarios could say that it is somewhat simple and repetitive as we move forward in our missions, there will be a better variety of them, along with its decor and stage design, which maintain a certain "level of realism" compared to the two previous games of which I have already mentioned. And when I said that this game has a much more "serious" appearance than the previous ones, it was not just to say it, because if we compare it with Burning Rangers (leaving aside that this is a game entirely in 3D) or especially if we compare it with The Firemen, which being equally in 2D as The Ignition Factor, it can make a better comparison with respect to character design, since in The Ignition Factor we have much more "realistic" character designs with proportions in their bodies much more similar to those of a real person, also have good designs which are easily recognizable and with very good details. Also aspects such as the animations that our character can perform are also very well done, it is not a spectacular level as far as animation is concerned, but they are good enough to look smooth and very well on screen. Although fire is also the protagonist in this game, I think it is not as well done as in The Firemen and in The Ignition Factor it lacks intensity, so sometimes when there is enough fire on screen you don't feel that level of danger as in the previous game mentioned.
What stands out the most about the sound aspect of The Ignition Factor are its sound effects, since sounds like footsteps, blows, the sound of smoke, explosions and the sound of fire itself play a very important role in the ambiance of the scenarios of this game, despite not being the best of its generation, I have to say that they are not bad at all and manage to fulfill their purpose very effectively. There are a few lines of digital voices that can perform the characters and although there are not many, the fact that they are there is something that adds a lot to the gameplay itself and the characterization of the characters. The music will also be present in this game, although like The Firemen, it will not be heard for too long while we are going through the scenarios, since the main protagonist in this aspect with respect to the sound section are the sound effects, such as footsteps, blows, explosions and others. But when it is time to play a melody, however short its duration is well done and in many cases, if not most of the time, it contributes a lot to create tension and even despair due to the amount of time we have left to complete the level.
The Ignition Factor unlike Burning Rangers and The Firemen has a much calmer and slower gameplay, in Burning Rangers for example its main attraction in the agility with which our character can move through the use of the jetpack, thus being able to reach very high heights so we can move around the stage very quickly and quite striking. In The Firemen, although less, our character also has enough agility, highlighting by far the large number of movements that we must do to dodge something "enemy attack", so to speak, since in this game some flares seem to have a life of their own and especially this can be seen in the battles with the "final bosses". However in The Ignition Factor everything is much slower, with more tranquility, as if we were not in front of a fire that could end our lives, but even so it is a game that is not devoid of action and tension in equal parts, because although it does not have the mobility of the previously mentioned games, we still have to be fast enough to do what we were asked to do: put out fires, as this is still the main mechanics of this game, put out fires and save a civilian who is in danger. The Ignition Factor is a very entertaining game, almost as entertaining as the two previous games I talked about a week ago and although much more "serious" than the previous ones, it is still quite fun.
