While I was going through some files in my computer I found a draft of a review I had started writing a couple of years ago, but for some reason, which I'm sure it was thanks to my classic procrastination, I never finished writing it and it had been stored in a folder for too long. This review is about an action platformer game with a pretty dark theme, its appearance reminds me of Alucard from the anime/manga Hellsing and as I already mentioned, it's about a pretty entertaining action platformer game and I have to say that it's a bit difficult in some aspects, so this game represents a pretty good challenge for every lover of this genre games. That's why after a couple of years and surprisingly I bring this review, in fact, maybe at the time I thought I had already published this review, it's quite strange, but without further ado.
Today's Retro Review is about: Chakan: The Forever Man.
Although most games of this genre have a fairly simple story, the premise of this one in particular is quite interesting because it tells the story of Chakan, a formidable warrior who prides himself on being the best of all and although he is right, he is too arrogant in his purpose since he claims to be able to defeat death itself, so one day death itself appears before him and for several days they face each other in a fight to the death where they both have a goal: If Chakan wins death must grant him eternal life so he can fight for all eternity, however if death wins, our protagonist must work for him as his servant for all eternity. Being a fair enough deal for both parties, they face each other, resulting in Chakan surprisingly winning, however, death being a being of infinite wisdom and experience and at the same time evil, grants our protagonist eternal life, however, he is condemned to wander throughout his existence until all evil is destroyed and when I say ALL is ALL. A rather interesting story, which is still simple, but still has a much more solid argument than 90% of the games of this genre.
Chakan: The Forever Man is a game with a rather gloomy and dark aspect, being its main color palette, the colors black, gray, however this is not something that is negative, since the developers of this game knew how to keep all that gloomy and dark aspect and make them stand out in combination with other colors. The "gothic" theme is very present in this video game and can be seen mainly in the design of our character, but also and logically in the scenarios, which present a decent variety of places to go with our character. The design of our character is dark and gloomy, it is a kind of very agile zombie equipped with two swords which he uses to eliminate his enemies, although the size and design of the sprite is not something extremely detailed, if it presents enough details so that it can stand out on screen and especially be easily recognized and understood. As I already mentioned, the scenarios have gothic elements with a very dark and gloomy aspect, which manage to stand out with certain characteristic elements such as lights or illuminated points that make a good contrast with all the dark colors that prevail in this video game.
The design of enemies is also something very good, creature designs that we could see in games like Bloodborne, keeping the theme of "dark and gloomy designs". A game with this so dark is logical to have a music to match, so in this game we will find a series of very good melodies that decorate very well those scenarios of gloomy and dark theme. Many of these melodies, some of which will have fast rhythms that allude to the action, but maintaining certain elements that remind us once again that we are facing a game where darkness and gothic theme, to some extent, is the main protagonist. Likewise, the sound effects are quite good and fulfill their purpose.
Chakan: The Forever Man is an action and platform game with a somewhat high difficulty, I really did not expect such a large difficulty curve when I played it for the first time and it is something that took me by surprise, since I have to admit that I lost several times during my time playing this game. Chankan, our protagonist is equipped with two swords which will be his main weapons and with them he will be in charge of eliminating any enemy that gets in front of him. This is a game with a lot of platforming and our character will be in constant movement by having to jump over obstacles that allow us to advance in the scenario, so we must have a very correct use of our character because at the beginning, or at least for me, the jumping control of our character is not quite accurate, but with a few minutes of play this is something that you get used to quite easily. But what is not easy is the game itself, as it becomes quite difficult as we advance in the scenarios and this game becomes quite a challenge on many occasions, which for a player who loves this kind of challenges will be something quite good to test their skills. Chakan can perform different actions, from jumping to running and moving in different directions, he can even do a somersault in the air that helps him dodge attacks or simply position himself better to perform an attack. The scenarios are very well designed, so we will have a lot of fun moving through them, it is quite fun (in most cases) to move through them and overcome them, as well as eliminate our enemies and final bosses. Although his main weapons are his two swords, he can also equip different weapons that have very different ways of attacking each other, thus giving a little offensive variety to our protagonist. Chakan: The Forever Man is an excellent game, quite difficult and surprisingly for me, it has a comic book adaptation.
