When it comes to anime, I tend to be quite demanding when it comes to storylines, although other details are also important to me, but to a lesser extent. Over the years, when watching Japanese animated series, I have come across some extraordinary productions, some that deliver and others that tend to be disappointing from the outset. A few days ago, I got my hands on a 2020 anime based on Suu Minazuki's manga. It's in the science fiction, action, and romance genres. This production is a sh艒nen called Plunderer, which has a story that I find interesting, but also a little confusing. I'll discuss this and much more below, so I hope you'll continue reading.
This story is unique because people are marked with a counter: the higher the number, the more important the person is and the more power they have. When the counter reaches zero, the characters are taken to what is known as the Abyss, which is to say they die. This fate is feared by all, so most people try to protect their numbers and not risk them in battle, as warriors often do. This is where we meet Hina, a young woman whose mother was sent to the Abyss, so she asks her to find the legendary Ase, a group of strong characters. On her way, she meets Licht Bach, a character who uses a sword, is quite strong, has a high counter, and even hides his true number. As the first chapters progress, we discover that Litch is one of the Legendary Aces, as there are other very strong people who refer to him as such.
Licht is a rather mysterious character. He seems like a good person, although at first he wants to play the bad guy. In the anime, we gradually learn more details, but I find many of them confusing; at least, I didn't fully understand them. Something strange is that the anime takes place in medieval times, but our characters go back in time to see who Licht really is, and time looks like the present. I find this quite strange and I don't understand it, even now. I didn't want to research it too much or go into too much depth, so I could give you my personal opinion based on my experience of watching the anime.
Plunderer has a total of 24 episodes, each lasting just over 23 minutes. It's an action, science fiction, romance anime, but with a touch of comedy. I found the latter a little excessive; the humor didn't fit well at various points in the story, which I also found a little strange in the anime. At first it was tedious, I must say quite boring, but as it progresses, you may find yourself getting hooked, at least that was the case for me. As the episodes go by, the story gets better, although I don't think it's enough to say that this story is another masterpiece, because in the end it isn't, at least in terms of plot.
As Plunderer progresses, we meet new characters, some of whom we grow fond of and others not so much. If I had to take something positive from this anime, it would be the message it tried to convey. At least I felt that this anime makes us understand that human value cannot be reduced to a number, that the past does not define your future, and that there is a bond between people. Humans are not tools for fighting, and that is where we see the different characters we encounter in the story. Licht, as I said, is a mysterious character who has clearly been through a lot, and it is interesting to learn about his story. Hina represents innocence that survives horror. Jail represents justice that confronts its own system. The Aces represent the living memory of a past that no one wants to remember. Another interesting character is Lynn. I did like the character development, at least something positive in all of this.
The animation in Plunderer is definitely a success, with great character design, special effects during the fights, and the characters' movements are more than fine. It's an anime that delivers visually, unlike what the plot may turn out to be. The soundtrack is decent; I don't think it's a masterpiece, but at least it does the job. Honestly, the anime didn't live up to my expectations; it fell short. It was boring at first, and I almost gave up, but I decided to stick with it until the end, and there are some positive details to be found. The anime wasn't as successful as expected either. The only season that aired was in 2020, as it was the first. From then on, there was no further news, and it's obvious that it was canceled. It wasn't what was expected of the production. Despite the tedious beginning, little by little the story picked up pace, and despite all the negatives, I wanted to see how the story ended. This anime isn't for everyone. It might be good for passing the time, but nothing more.
