Nos dice Barbara Ehrenreich en su libro Smile or Die: How Positive Thinking Fooled America and the World que:
The new religion
Barbara Ehrenreich tells us in her book Smile or Die: How Positive Thinking Fooled America and the World that:
On a website for teachers, a woman asked colleagues, "Please send positive thoughts to my son-in-law," who had just been diagnosed with a stage IV brain tumor. The father of a soldier who had gone missing in action in Iraq went on CNN telling viewers, "I would ask everyone to give us their positive thoughts and help to get through this. If everybody gives us their prayers and their positive thoughts, we can do it [...] I know the military is doing everything they can, and right now the important thing is to think positive."
This contribution made me reflect on a phenomenon that like a smokescreen has been invading us: We have changed prayers to God for positive thoughts.
This change is due to multiple factors, on the one hand the fact that we feel autonomous, since the focus on positive thoughts is not linked to any religious doctrine, which allows us, according to what we have been led to believe, greater freedom to find our own spiritual path. Added to the fact that much emphasis is placed on the present, hence practices such as meditation and others of a non-religious nature focus on the moment we are living, ignoring the transcendent sense of the human being. In addition to this, abuses of power, unethical practices and lack of transparency in religious institutions have eroded our trust in them, as has the promotion of individual wealth and well-being where I need the other to help me in my abundance.
Positive thinking is easy. It is difficult prayer life. With the former I do and decide, with the latter I must obey and wait. Sometimes we make this change out of ignorance, sometimes out of pride. Where the flag raised is that phrase "I am spiritual but not religious", which denotes ignorance of two concepts that are not independent.
This being so, positive thinking is today a great religion, which, taking into account what we want and desire, provides a sense of community and belonging. A reality that has caused the emergence, once again, of a cocktail that guarantees fame and wealth, in the words of the renowned author:
The most popular American preachers today are the positive thinkers, who no longer make any reference to sin, nor dwell on the two workhorses of the Christian right, which are abortion and homosexuality. No longer does anyone threaten hell or promise salvation, or tell the grim story of Jesus' torture on the cross; in fact, there are hardly any crosses to be seen in the new evangelical creed's favorite temples, the megachurches.
In short, we have exchanged prayers to God for positive thinking, where the new religion is positive thinking.
