One of the most fun things on the steem universe are the contests. And most of all I enjoy the photography related ones!
His new contest's theme is Tell Me About Where You Live and it is a subject I like so much that I have already answer to it many times till now!
So my entry is actually, not one, not two but ten posts! Each and every picture is linked to a full post that you are more than welcome to read if you are in the mood to find out more about the small corner of our planet that I call home! But even if you don't want to follow all that links I hope that you'll find this compilation post interesting enough, on its own!
You may have read at my blog that I was living at a small beautiful village in Greece. Well, I still do but I have moved a few kilometers to the east, to another small and beautiful village, the one at the picture above!
The stone with the carved number on it, is a reminder that I am walking on the old national road that connected the east with the west side of the island.
The name of the village is Myrsini and you can find it on the northeast side of the island of Crete, between the towns of Agios Nikolaos and Sitia. It is a very small village with around 120 people living here during the winter and about double in the summer but it has everything we need :)
On this part of the island there are 8 villages with similar topography that are known all together by the name the northern villages. Seven of them are on the mountain above the coastline at an altitude of 300 – 400 meters and one on the sea level that used to be the port and commerce center for all the others. So from every village there was a path for people and donkeys that was essential for the economy of the whole area.
Beautiful hikes, amazing gorges and astonishing beaches are the ingredients of my neighborhood! What can I say, I am blessed to live among nature's beauty :)
Richtis gorge is only a few km away from my home so I visit it often!
On this peaceful part of the island, Xerokampos is the most remote coastal village. "The Far East of Crete" as I like to call it and "krinakia" (meaning lilies in Greek) is my favorite beach. Apart from the fact that it is a gorgeous sandy beach it is also blessed with an amazing plant! Sea daffodil flourishes every fall and when it does I make sure not to miss it!
"Tsigounis" gorge is almost at the middle of the route from "Agios Nikolaos" to "Sitia", just before the village "Sfaka". You won't find any signs so you might need some help finding your way in and probably your way out, too :)
This path is part of an old mule road that used to connect our village with a small port and the rest of the world! Once very significant, today it is reclaimed by the wild vegetation and until a few days ago it was extremely difficult to cross.
Although my village has a sea view, the sea itself is about a 10' drive away. So when we feel like eating fish while listening to the sound of sea, we all go to Mochlos!
A very small fishing village with a handful of taverns and a few rooms to let, a totally scenic place ideal for a few days of relaxation or for my dinner!
There are 3 towns in the area, about 30-35 km away from my place. All of them are quite small, around 10.000 people each but very beautiful! The most popular among the tourists is Agios Nikolaos and the best part of the town is the lake!
I know that photography as a two-dimensional representation of a much more complex reality can never fully express what we see (and feel with all of our senses at the same time) but I tried to do my best to give you an idea!
