The fact that I still haven't written a post dedicated to Chania is almost paranormal! I have presented you so many Greek towns, villages, locations and landmarks all over the country and I have neglected one of the most beautiful settlements that we have! And even worst it is on the same island that I live for the past 8 years :)

The main attraction is definitely the old harbor. It is made by the Venetians the 14th century when it was their time to rule this small piece of land with so large and turbulent history! Now it is a lovely scenery to walk around and take pictures, as well as the place with the most taverns, coffee shops and bars of the town! I'll be back later for some pictures in the dusk!

This is the municipal market of Chania, mostly known as Agora witch means market in Greek. I promise to dswigle@dswigle that the next time I'll go she'll have a full coverage for her #MarketFriday challenge. Till then take a look to the historic building that, according to the sign under the clock, has been standing there since 1913!

That building is Agios Nikolaos, the only church in Greece with a bell tower AND a minaret, a beautiful reminder that Muslims and Christians lived here in harmony for centuries! It is a monument that embody the long history of the town. Originally built in 1320 by the Venetians, as a Catholic monastery, in 1645 become a mosque by the Ottomans and finally in 1918 an Orthodox church.

When the heat and the sightseeing gets too overwhelming, a stop at the municipal garden is in order. It is not the most spectacular garden you have ever seen but it is cool and fun :)

And once you catch your breath back to the old town for more narrow streets, old buildings and picturesque chapels!

I am not a materialist, in the sense that I don't believe that spending money will bring happiness or will guarantee a pleasant vacation. But when you are introduced to your accommodation with images like the ones below and you are presented a room like that, I can say that it is up to you to have a wonderful time :)

And as the sunlight fades away the magic starts to grow! Chania is an impressive old town during the day but at night it is a Greek fairy-tale, with a lot of lights, a lot of food and a lot of raki, the traditional alcoholic beverage that will blow your mind :)
