A heavy rain had passed just before the images were taken and another thunderstorm loomed in the distance. The air was still humid, the new sun had begun peeking through the clouds again, when a little show took place in a puddle.

Just a couple minutes after the rain passed, the birds were brave again. This one, a lovely yellowhammer, wasted no time splashing and washing himself completely. I really enjoyed watching him splash around in the water with droplets flying everywhere and him cleaning his feathers. I think this series of 16 photos really captures the movement and joy of life this little bird has.

The yellowhammer (Emberiza citrinella) is a finch present across much of Europe and Asia. Males are distinctly striking with their bright yellow heads and yellow underparts that contrast with striped brown backs. Females can be somewhat dull but are typically identifiable. They inhabit open landscapes with hedges, bushes and trees and are frequently found in agricultural settings along the edges of forests. They primarily feed on seeds, especially in the winter months, whereas they eat insects during the summer to feed to their chicks.

Bathing is an important maintenance task for birds like the Yellowhammer. It is how they remove dust, dirt and parasites as well as keep their feathers supple, which is hugely important for flying and insulation. It was so lovely to be witness to this display of pure joy and instinctual behaviour.
