Have you noticed how crazy the weather has been these past few days?
The world is crazy?
For some time now, there’s been talk about climate change—especially global warming—but recently, with the movement of tectonic plates—which is what shook Venezuela after that earthquake—a chain of unfortunate, though natural, events has unfolded, bringing devastating consequences.
Yesterday, for just 20 minutes, there was rain accompanied by strong winds that battered the state of Monagas as a whole. In the city of Maturín, there were multiple landslides, but above all, fallen trees that knocked down power lines and left the city without power for several hours. Although this wasn’t noticed at first—since we’ve been dealing with an electricity crisis for months now, and we haven’t received a real answer or a reason as to why they’re implementing such extensive power rationing every day.
Truly, Venezuelans use the word “resilience” a lot, but I think this concept has started to take a different turn. Because being a resilient person doesn’t mean living in agony; it doesn’t mean accepting misfortune; it doesn’t mean sinking into what we’re going through right now. A resilient person is someone who goes through difficulties but returns to their normal state, having improved; it’s the person who falls into the mud but gets back up, cleans themselves off, and learns that the mud is disgusting . Resilience isn’t about someone who falls into the mud and learns to live in it. We need to redefine this concept; we need to go back to the root—where we fight for well-being—instead of simply learning to live poorly.
