An Island getaway off the European continent that many Europeans like myself enjoy visiting to soak up the relaxing atmosphere and the cool climate. Welcome to Ameland, a beautiful Island located off the north coast of Friesland, the Netherlands. If you have 'never' been to one of the many gorgeous islands off the mainland, then you are truly missing out. Known for their beautiful sand dunes, excellent bars, cafes, and warm natured natives, these Islands are paradise on earth, well for me anyway. Find the link below for more detailed information about this West Frisian Island.
Located on the Island is a traditional looking lighthouse, which looks like it's still in operation today, but hard to tell.
Fantastic Food
Catering for tourists on Ameland is very important and the cafes are really good, from the food to the decor of the establishments, super smart and great customer service.
Easy Peasy
The ferry over to Ameland leaves from the port of Holwerd, Friesland and felt like a smooth experience, taking around 45 minutes from port-to-port. The ferries traverse a route mapped out by buoys located throughout the sailing lane, carrying cars, passengers and not forgetting a fair few bicycles, as that IS the best way to get around the Island, utilising those cycle paths.
On your Bike
As stated earlier, the best way to travel around the Island is by bicycle and there are many types, from standard to tandem and my personal preference, which is an electric one. With one of these, one can cover the entire island with an electric assisted bicycle, so much fun to ride and very green as well.
Well, for certain I can say that I want to come back to Ameland as soon as I can and this is a place one could write a book, a poem, or even a song. For myself it's truly a special destination, highly inspirational and I think I may have just found my 'Treasure Island', so won't be forgotten any time soon.
Thanks for taking the time to view amazing Ameland.
