Horace Silver (piano), Gene Taylor (contrabajo) y Louis Hayes (batería).

The double bass is a string instrument with a low-pitch tessitura that usually has four strings. It can be played with a bow or plucking the strings (pizzicato) and is the lowest stringed instrument in the symphony orchestra. The history of double bass in modern jazz begins with Jimmy Blanton, an extraordinary bow soloist, precursor of the pizzicato style, and double bassist in Duke Ellington’s big band who completely redefined the vocabulary of his instrument. With his flexible technique, superb sense of swing and fluid imagination, Blanton moved freely in the band, soloing as if his double bass were a wind instrument without weakening the bass’s support in the music.

He released a dozen albums under his name, most notably Deep Passion (1957) with his own big band.

Silver starts playing with Taylor and Hayes a gloomy tune. His sentences are slow and heavy: it’s the melancholy that torments and taunts him. His mournful solo reaffirmed by the double bass is one of despondency and despair. There’s not trace of joy or comfort. He then begins to play the notes louder to clearly express his mood looking for a warm hug. He shares his nostalgic discourse with the piano, which seems to be his only friend. Afterwards Hayes sets a slightly livelier rhythm, but the darkness takes over the theme again until its final re-exposition.
