Baghdad is the capital of Iraq and one of the largest cities in the Arab world with almost nine million inhabitants. It’s located on the banks of the Tigris River near the ruins of ancient Babylon, and is of Persian origin. It was built in the 8th century by the Abbasid caliph Al-Mansur with more than one hundred thousand people and designed as a circle of two kilometers in diameter in the center of which stood the mosque. Shortly after its foundation it became an important political, military, commercial and cultural center of Islam. It was protected by a wall with four gates and had a good strategic location, thanks to which it controlled important trade routes, in addition to having abundance of water.
