K.I. SAWYER, Mich. (WLUC) - A group of K.I. Sawyer residents are working to spread literacy in their community. It's called the Read UP Bookmobile.
They've set up about 10 kiosks so far in the K.I. Sawyer neighborhood. Inside are free books for kids or teens to read and then return. Community members came together to build and install the mini libraries. The goal behind the kiosks is to promote literacy through the community.
"This is my mission in life now, my mission is to spread literacy through the U.P., it's in the name, Read UP so that's my goal in the end," said Founder of the Read UP Bookmobile, Melissa Derby.
"I want to see the children here start reading more because reading leads to further education and better education leads to better life choices," said Read UP Bookmobile Volunteer, Ryan Lipinski.
The group hopes to expand the program to other communities if they get funding for more kiosks. More information on the project can be found in the related links section on this page.
