One of the high schools I went to in the 1970’s was something called a “Free School.” You can look up this movement in wiki, but it basically meant you did not have to go to class, no attendance was taken after you checked in each morning, and teenagers were supposed to thrive with options unlimited.
Most of the free schools were small. Mine was one of the few large ones with about 2000 students. Some of them did thrive.
In each grade you were supposed to get 9 credits on a trimester schedule. In 9th Grade when I was 13/14 years old, I got one-third of a credit for the entire year since I was thriving in other ways besides going to school.
Most of us took advantage of the freedom. When the teachers went on strike from December to May that year, times got even better. Supposedly we were going to class and teaching ourselves.
Later my mom told me she got a letter from the school to make sure we came each day during the strike, so she thought we were doing school.
I was at school each morning when my dad dropped me off, and one place I would check in was the cafeteria. This was run by students and did not have the regular lights on. Instead LOUD rock and roll played and strobes and neon lights were on display at 7:30 AM and continuing throughout the day.
The music was limited and if you stayed for any length of time, you were sure to hear the full 17 minute version of “In A Gadda Da Vida by the drugged out members of the band Iron Butterfly. Let me link it here for you:
This 17 minute song has one verse repeated many times at the beginning and end and the middle of the song has solos by the various performers who look quite dazed in this video from 1968.
Please listen to the first minute and then click through to be astounded if you have never seen or heard this. Yes, it still played everywhere through most of the 1970’s. I am sure I heard it hundreds of times, but most often in that cafeteria.
Most of us got sick of it, but other the few other choices such as Black Sabbath “War Pigs” and “We're an American Band” by Grand Funk Railroad got old too. Plus, it was so loud!
So it was best to just eat the free breakfast and launch out into where ever you felt like going that day. We had rooms in the school where teachers were not allowed, alfalfa fields to hang out in on three sides of the school, and city bus stops that could take you to the subway and the big city. No need to sit all day and rock out with the stoners.
