This poem was inspired by a story mama told me
If love was a song, i would sing it everyday
But no one told me it could be a sad song
One thing with sad songs is
They make you cry
She was my childhood love
I remember carrying her as a child
I was just 5years then
She became my world
At age 15 i dropped out of school to fend for myself
I was born with no spoon
And in all my suffering
She was my peace
She had a dream to study art
And so i doubled my hussle to put her through school
We made a vow to be together
Always and forever
At the begining she called everyday
But as time passed bye
She became somewhat a school celebrity
She was pretty, sophisticated and talented
And then she stopped calling and visiting
And only did when she needed money
"You know how school is, i barely have time" she says
And i believed her
After four years she graduated
And when i stared into her eyes
I knew she was no longer mine
Sticks and stones may break my bones but words hurts the heart
I tried to remind her of good old times
When she called me nkem and i called her adaora
But it didn't matter now
Money and fame had ripped off those memories
So i sank into depression
Holding on by a thread
But as they said at your lowest seek peace
i picked up my broken heart, or whats left of it
So i put my self through medschool
Just to prove to her i could also be a "big boy"
But awhile i discovered
Been big is of the heart
So i seeked her to tell her those three words one more time
I needed closure
one day i saw her at a bar and i approached
"Hey, i..."
But before i could finished
She spat on my face and walked out
A tear for every moment
"Doctor! A Trauma patient with two gun shots and multiple bone fractures" the nurse scream to me
"Put the patient on drip, administer anasthesia and send her blood to the lab for cross matching" i scream back
Shreds! She whispered
And i look down to see she was my patient..
She wanted to say something
But i held her hands and smiled
The closure i always seeked came rushing
A tear for this moment
And i sighed with relief
Sticks and stones may break my bones but words can heal the heart
As i whispered those three words before she fell asleep
"I forgive you"
