A couple hours northwest of Edinburgh (and about an hours drive north of Glasgow) there is a place called Finnich Glen. Its essentially a bunch of fields, a couple farms and country roads surrounded by trees on either side. However, nearby a river flows, completely surround by trees and hidden from the road. If you don't know its there, you won't ever find it.
What is so special about the area is that this river has carved a gorge through the landscape and because of the particular qualities of the stone, the water becomes a blood red colour. Because of this the gorge has been called the Devil's Pulpit and is well known for being picturesque as hell. So much so that it was used as a set for the big fight scene at the end of the movie 'The Eagle' starring Channing Tatum.
Getting there is tricky and requires at the very least, good walking shoes. You have to climb over a stone wall, follow a path through the trees and then climb down some very muddy and slippery steps carved into the stone with nothing but a rather flimsy rope to hold onto.
Oh and climbing down is very steep and it gets narrow.. very narrow as you can see in the above picture, but the narrowness only lasts a short time.
Once you get to the bottom though you will be glad you made the effort because it is a magical place.
By the end of my stay I was desperately looking for more things to photograph because I just didn't want to leave (or face climbing back up), but there was nothing left to photograph and it was starting to rain. So I bit the bullet and headed back to the car for the long drive back home.
