The Story of an Unfinished Temple
There are places where the history feels distant, and then there are places which seems to remain embedded in the stones beneath your feet.
Bhojeshwar Mahadev Temple in Bhojpur, near Bhopal. The temple was commissioned during the reign of the King Bhoja, dated to the 11th Century. The Ambition of the project was quite visible by the extraordinary scale of it all. But it was never completed.
Bhojeshwar Mahadev has remained a place of worship. People are there not to contemplate an architecture that was never completed but to encounter something sacred to all. People come with flowers, offerings and prayers. They stand before the Shiva Lingam, fold their hands to offer their prayers.
A temple imagined in stone
The scale of the place is overwhelming to the visitors at first glance. The temple rises from the landscape that makes the humans seem small. Inside the sanctum, the Shiva lingam Reinforces the sense of scale as it is approximately 2.3 meters high. Occupying the centre of a space whose architecture appears designed to accommodate something larger than ordinary human proportions.
But the most intriguing evidence of the temple's ambition lies outside the finished structure. On rocks around the temple are architectural drawings engraved into the stone.
the plans are included with details associated with the temple's design evidences of a building process in which architecture was not simply imagines in the mind and then translate into stone, but planned, measured and recorded.
Surrounding landscape is part of the story, there are quarries, unfinished architectural pieces, engraved drawings and traces of construction create a wider archaeological landscape. they show the temple was part of a much larger undertaking.
Nearly a thousand years later, the lines drawn by its architects remain on the rocks. the stones they shaped remain standing. the marks of the craftsmen remain embedded in the monument.
