Rhythms After Dark: A Night of Tribal Dance at India Habitat Centre, New Delhi
Delhi has a way of bringing together two different worlds at the same time in the same evening. One moment you are attending a discussion on wildlife and few hours later, you can find yourself surrounded by music movement and traditional tribal dance.
I had gone there to attend an event related to wildlife. India Habitat Centre is an institutional space in the capital, this place is known for hosting exhibitions, meetings, conferences, film and video launches, performances and discussions covering a wide range of things. the lights and shadows added a different kind of vibe to the scene, making it truly interesting subject to photograph.
Was carrying my Oppo Reno 12 Pro and I began capturing these moments as they unfolded. India Habitat Centre is deeply associated with the cultural and intellectual life of Delhi. They regularly become venues of exhibitions, meetings, launches, screenings, conversations and public events. But, on this night, the focus shifted from presentations and discussions to something much more instinctive.... music, rhythm and dance.
Photographing a dance performance at night is a very difficult and challenging task. the performers are constantly moving, while there is light available light can change from one moment to another. instead of trying to capture everything perfectly, I found myself looking for small moments and expressions on a face, the colors of traditional clothing or the instance when several dancers seemed to move together as one.
As the dancers performed, the surroundings of the area became a backdrop of color, moment and tradition. The modern urban environment of New Delhi and the cultural expressions of India's Tribal communities came together in the same frame.
Sometimes the most interesting photographs are the ones you weren't planning to take. this was one of those evenings, a wildlife event that unexpectedly turned into a night of tribal rhythms at one of New Delhi's Best known cultural spaces.
