Did you ever start out going one place, only to end up diverting elsewhere? Story of my life. Fortunately, none of the journey is ever really wasted. What do I mean?

Well, I graduated high school in 1981, got an industrial engineering degree in 1984, and became an engineer in a steel plant. 3 months later, I was laid off. Disaster? I thought so for a few weeks, as I did temporary secretarial work and desperately searched for a new job, but my life was not yet over at 21. Providentially (as a Jesus-follower, I don't call anything "luck") I stumbled into the hottest profession at that time in the Chicago area--actuarial work. Was my engineering degree "wasted"? No! Math skills are always marketable. I became a successful, married career woman while hubby got his Ph.D. in chemical engineering. Kids? Na! I called children "negative cash flow."

Forward to 1988: I am pregnant. I plan to give birth, then head straight back to office. Yeah, right. As soon as I saw that tiny person, my whole life changed yet again. I became one of the earliest of that new breed, telecommuters, working from home part time, office part time. I had a state-of-the-art land line telephone and a modem (a big box attached to the aforementioned phone.)

Dateline 1990: Hubby has Ph.D. and a faculty position in North Carolina. I have quit my job, having a toddler and another little biscuit in the oven. Yes, children are negative cash flow--but they are also much more. Having a child is an act of faith, a statement that you believe in the future enough to make an investment of blood, sweat, tears, and almost zero sleep. Was I now completely "wasting" that engineering degree? Stay tuned for more.
