Yesterday, our son @stow01 touched down in Oslo, Norway, wrapping up a massive 20-day journey across Venezuela, Mexico, and the US. The whole point of the trip was just to renew his passport—a hassle no citizen from any other country should have to face, literally flying across the world just to keep their papers valid. Of course, we were absolutely thrilled when we found out he was coming home. Since he rushed to get the paperwork done just two days after landing and paid the expediting fee, he couldn't stay long due to his Norwegian classes starting back up. When trips are this short, you can't really pack the schedule, so we missed out on our usual jam-packed itinerary that we always dive into whenever he visits.

We just jumped on a quick call since it’s his birthday today and he’s hosting a bunch of friends at his apartment, so we kept it shorter than usual. Honestly, it was more on me not wanting to crash his party than him showing any signs of rushing off. The whole call definitely got us reflecting on just how emotional his visit really was. Back on October 20th, his flight took off from Maiquetía bound for Mexico City. With a brutal 5:45 a.m. departure time, we had to show up three hours early at the domestic parking lot—literally the only spot available to drop off international passengers. The reason? The Simón Bolívar airport was completely destroyed by Venezuela's June 24th earthquake, so they've been running everything out of a temporary setup. And right there, in the dead of night, we said our goodbyes since we weren't allowed to walk him inside the terminal.

One thing that caught us off guard about this goodbye was just how low-key the emotions were. Honestly, every single time we say goodbye to one of our kids, it leaves us completely devastated. But that early morning was different, and I’ve been trying to figure out why ever since. I keep asking myself: what made this time so different from the others? Has our love for our kids cooled down? Was it just because the visit was so short? Or maybe because less time had passed between last year's visit and this one? I just can't pinpoint why the emotional toll felt so different this time around compared to previous trips. And yeah, I get that for many, overthinking this might look like a total waste of emotional energy, but since peace of mind is what we're all constantly chasing, I’m genuinely intrigued by why it hit us less this time. Because if I can unlock the reason, it’ll definitely help us swallow those bitter pills much easier during future goodbyes.
¿Lejos o cerca? Depende de la mentalidad de cada quien.

After overthinking this to death, we finally realized it’s all about seeing our kids truly thriving. At the end of the day, a parent's biggest worry is just knowing their kids are okay, and seeing them hold their own out there in the world brings this massive wave of peace. So now, the next move is dreaming about our reunion on European soil, maybe road-tripping around that gorgeous Nordic country. We're talking a place where hitting the sauna is the ultimate social hangout and the summer midnight sun stretches the days out so you can live them to the absolute fullest. Or who knows, maybe a winter trip to cruise through those famous fjords and head way up north to catch the northern lights. Dreaming is free, and as the days roll by, we'll keep holding onto that hope of seeing each other again. Is it too far off or just around the corner? Honestly, that's all a mindset.
