The metal dog clunked its way towards me, steam puffing from its razor jaws.

"Woof!" it said, kinda comically.

"It looks more scary than it sounds," I said to Preston. "Perhaps it needs an upgrade." Preston nodded. He flicked a switch, and the dog stopped, hot vapour leaking from its body. "It is kinda cool, though."

"Thanks," Preston said. He'd been working on his mechanical dog project for months. He looked tired and probably a dose of sunshine would do him the world of good.

"Fancy a walk?" I said. Preston shook his head. "We could go to the zoo," I suggested. "Find a bear or some other creature you could record to get your beast sounding a bit more scary." Preston scratched his head and for a moment I thought he'd agree.

"Naaaa," he said eventually. "I think I'll just download something from the net."
