They met outside the divorce court.
Later they would joke about it, arguing in good humour about whether it was a good omen or a bad one.
Neither of them worked there, nor were clients of the place. Rather they just happened to be in the right place at the right time. Both of them lost in a city they had just arrived in. Both of them asking the other if they knew the way to the Old Docks, an inn they had been recommended by relatives.
"What a coincidence!" he said, smiling.
"I don't believe in coincidence," she said. "I think it must be fate. Let's go and have coffee."
And that is what they did. The rest, as they say is history.
And a very happy one at that.
Years later, they would tell that story to their grandchildren.
Not that the kids were interested.
They just rolled their eyes and went back to looking at their phones.
The two old love birds smiled and held hands and when they left the world, they left it together.
