Depression seems to be ravaging our society today. It is a serious issue that everyone seems to ignore. We hear cases of teens and youths committing suicide daily. Mental health is as important as any other type of health.
What is depression? According to Better Health Channel, depression is a constant feeling of sadness and loss of interest, which stops you from carrying out your normal activities. Different types of depression exist, with symptoms ranging from relatively minor to severe. Generally, depression does not result from a single event, but a mix of events and factors.
A few years ago, I battled with depression. It almost cost my life. I struggled with it for a very long time alone. I suddenly lost interest in everything that used to be fun. I stopped enjoying the company of others. I was always in my room and I stopped eating. I only saw the negative side of every situation. I didn't see solutions to problems. Within a short time, I became a shadow of myself.
Suicidal thoughts became my daily meal. I would think of ways to go about it. I was selfish, I thought of myself alone neglecting the pains my demise will cause my family and friends. It wasn't just about me, I was very wrong. I was bitter and angry. I focused more on the things I didn't have and had no control over, neglecting the beautiful things that I was blessed with.
My family sensed something was wrong and they immediately sprang into action. They were there for me, my friends also. The love I received during that season of my life was immeasurable. Again, I was wrong, I didn't have to go through it alone. I started allowing people in, I shared my pains and fears with others. With this came solutions, beyond my wildest imagination. I became me again within a short time.
My heart goes out to others that lost their lives to this demon called depression. We don't have to lose any more life. There is always light at the end of the tunnel. You don't have to go through life alone. Speak out today, speak to someone, your family, friends, pastor, or a therapist. Life is beautiful so don't be in a hurry to leave it.
Say no to suicide. You can fight this, you are stronger than you think. Your family needs you, the world needs you. Remember you are loved.
