I remember very well that when I was a child, then our father was a government officer and he used to get government accommodation at all places posting. Due to frequent relocation, we did not have very good or valuable items with us.
There was only much-needed folding furniture and wearing clothes, etc., as valuables came out in broken condition in transportation. Similarly, due to living in government colonies, the condition of the houses of all others was similar to ours. In our colony, children of all ages used to play together and also used to do mischief. But no one ever thought ill of anyone.
One day a very senior officer came to live in our colony, his wife had come after getting an education from some higher education institution and was probably a citizen of foreign origin. When his luggage was being unloaded from the truck, we saw that many valuables and ostentatious items were also being unloaded in his luggage. But at that time I had no understanding of these things.
There was also a guava garden in the inner part of the house where they got to stay, in that garden all of us children used to enter to pluck the guava.
After the new officer came there, it came to know that he has just got married and he is still having a child. And his wife also did not understand our language.
One day my friend and I entered their house and started going through the drawing room to go to the guava orchard, then we saw that there was a thick beautiful mattress-like thing lying on the floor of the drawing-room, the officer's wife told us loudly. scolded in her language which we did not understand. But from her gesture, it seemed that she did not like our coming and entering in the drawing room.
When I told this my father, he started laughing and said that there is a carpet in the drawing room of his house, on which you must have gone with earthen shoes, so he must have got angry. Children walk on that carpet with dirty feet or shoes, they get spoiled very quickly. That was very valuable.
I came to know on the same day that there is also something called carpet which is laid on the floor.
