Spialia sertorius (Hoffmannsegg, 1804)
Der rote Würfel-Dickkopffalter ist ein Tagfalter aus der Familie der Dickkopffalter (Hesperiidae). Der Falter fliegt auf Magerrasen und in Steinbrüchen. Als einzige Futterpflanze der Raupen ist er auf den kleinen Wiesenknopf (Sanguisorba minor) angewiesen. Das Weibchen legt seine Eier ausschließlich in die Blüten der Pflanze. Die Raupe frisst zuerst die Blüte und später auch die Blätter. Aus den Blättern spinnt sich die Raupe ein Gespinst, in dem die Raupe ruht und später auch verpuppt. Der Falter fliegt in zwei Generationen von Mai bis August.
The red underwing Skipper is a butterfly of the family Hesperiidae. The butterfly flies on poor lawns and in quarries. As the only forage plant of the caterpillars, it is dependent on the small small burnet (Sanguisorba minor). The female lays her eggs exclusively in the flowers of the plant. The caterpillar first eats the blossom and later the leaves. From the leaves the caterpillar spins a web in which the caterpillar rests and later also pupates. The butterfly flies in two generations from May to August.
Der rote Würfel-Dickkopffalter zeigt ein ausgesprochenes Territorialverhalten. Von einem erhöhten Ansitz aus, verteidigt er sein Revier gegen fremde Eindringlinge. Obwohl er der kleinste unter allen Dickkopffalter ist, verscheucht er größere Falter unermüdlich um immer wieder an den selben Ansitz zurückzukommen.
The red underwing Skipper shows a distinct territorial behaviour. From a raised hide, it defends its territory against foreign invaders. Although it is the smallest of all mothers, it tirelessly chases away larger moths to return to the same hide again and again.
Roter Würfel-Dickkopffalter ist durch den fortschreitenden Verlust von Lebensraum stark bedroht. Noch vor wenigen Jahren konnte ich den kleinen Falter sehr zahlreich beobachten. Das hat sich geändert. Jetzt muss ich schon lange suchen, um den Falter zu finden.
The red underwing Skipper is severely threatened by the progressive loss of habitat. Only a few years ago I was able to observe this small butterfly in great numbers. This has changed. Now I have to search for a long time to find the butterfly.
