CYCLOPS
In Greek mythology, Cyclops is a one-eyed creature. There are several versions of the story that incorporate Cyclops-like creatures as one of its characters.
The plural cyclops are the three sons of Uranus and Gaea. They were thrown into Tartarus, but released by Zeus during the overthrow of Cronus. The three Cyclopes are named Brontes which means "thunder," Steropes which means "lightning", and Arges which means "light".
In Hesiod, they are the lightning and thunder maker of Zeus, the Hades helmet, and the Poseidon trident. Another story states that the Cyclopes served Hephaestus in his forge shop. In this version, Cyclopes is a blacksmith who lit a volcanic fire where Hephaestus made armor for the gods and goddesses.
But the most famous version of Cyclops probably comes from Homer's Odyssey story. On the way home, Odysseus meets the giant race of shepherds who become cave dwellers. Intrigued, Odysseus with twelve of his men visited and waited for them to return to the cave.
One of the successful Cyclops they met named Polyphemus. Odysseus and his men end up staying in the cave. Instead of getting the proper treatment, Odysseus is actually held in a cave and two of his men are eaten by Cyclops. Odysseus then drafted a plan to escape. He makes Polyphemus drunken, gouges out his eyes, and helps his men escape from inside the cave.
Since Odysseus told Polyphemus that his name was "No Man," when asking for help, Cyclops shouted that "No Man is killing me" so as to confuse his friends. But on the ship, Odysseus reveals his real name, allowing Polyphemus to call his father, Poseidon, to avenge. As a result, Odysseus had to travel very long because Poseidon blocked his way back home.
Polyphemus is also mentioned in a poem by Theocritus, which describes Polyphemus's attempt to seduce a fairy named Galatea, after first killing his beloved, Acis. Galatea eventually turned Axis into a river when it was dying and never interested in the Cyclops Polyphemus.
