My first thought on this theme is the end of the world, a time when the world has gotten to the point where it can no longer be saved.
This thought actually came from the movies I have seen though, they suggested the meaning to me. I have seen movies that have similar theme and connotes the same message.
But I know now that the edge of the world has a meaning of it's own. It simply means a remote place. And rightly so, the edge of the world is usually a remote place until it is not.
I selected the image above because it connotes both ideas I illustrated; the end of the world and a remote place. The end of the world can also lead to places, even major places to be remote in the end.
