Perhaps it is the curse of knowledge or communication gap, but I think men have this innate contrarian reaction to nagging or shit-test when dating. We are so used to it that mentioning or explaining it to women does not even trigger a thought.
I guess, we have from time to time remind our lady partners that they are not our mother.
