A few days ago I wrote a post on CineTv about my favorite holiday movies. I wanted to get into the holiday atmosphere, to feel a little carefree, because if I remember last year's vacation...No, that did not go well at all. Did I say that it didn't go well? The truth is that it went completely, absolutely, straight to hell...
And of course the question will come: What happened to you?
So get ready for a bad luck festival.
My origin is from Crete, that is, my mom lives there, in a small town. Nowadays, I live with my partner in Northern Greece but I go to see her whenever I can and I visit her every summer, for at least two weeks. So last summer, I packed my bags, I packed my partner (lolol) and we got on the plane to Crete
Do you picture it now?
Beaches with turquoise waters, beautiful small streets in the old town, cafe bar with tables outside in the sun, groups with raki and meze, improvised parties. Whatever you have imagined for Crete is true, I assure you.
Upon arrival at the airport, the first misfortune ... The car we were going to rent was damaged and we had to wait for another one. Ok, we thought, an opportunity for a walk in the city until they hand over the new car to us.
And as we were walking in the narrow streets of the city, suddenly blood flowed from the partner's nose. And when we say blood, we mean a lot ... a vampire would quench his thirst.
After giving him first aid, the bleeding did not stop, so we called an ambulance that transfered us to the city's hospital. (Note that my mother's house is in another city).
By the time the ENT doctor arrived (about half an hour later), the bleeding had almost stopped and we were thinking of leaving.
But then the doctor shows up. Insists on examining my partner (doctors know best, right?), proceed to the examination, makes a sharp movement with a tool, injures the inside of my partner's nose, the bleeding starts again.
Result: we got to stay in the hospital for half a day until the bleeding stopped.
We leave the hospital exhausted and decide to take a bus home instead of driving to my mom's house (60kms away). Smart move you will say ...
F$%#&*%&) not!
We get on the bus with our suitcases (fortunately, we always travel lightly), with a banded nose (my partner's), tired as f*ck. The moment the driver started the engine, we tried to close our eyes a little, to get some rest.
I think I might have slept no more than twenty minutes because I started to smell smoke. First thought, "This is Greece, someone lit a cigarette inside the bus". I opened my eyes and saw smoke coming out of the front of the bus. The driver halted the bus, the smoke kept coming out and we, the passengers took off the bus.
A slight incident you could say! Nah!
Of course, the engine of the bus was damaged, of course we had to wait for another one to arrive. (+1 hour still).
Dead tired now, we arrived late at night at my paternal home. As soon as my mom saw us, she started saging and reciting a prayer against the evil eye, spitting at our direction (this is customary against the evil eye, we do that in Greece), because she believed that someone have thrown all his negative energy at us.
After all this spitting and chatting with my mother we stayed home to rest a bit. The next day we would go out to meet friends we had time to see. Because we were walking all day I was hungry and I wanted to have a quick bite. I had a souvlaki (the favorite street food of the Greeks) and devoured it on the spot.
Everything was going smoothly until the moment we met our friends. As soon as we sat down at the cafe, my stomach started making strange noises (you know, the ones that make you suspect something is wrong), I had a general discomfort and I wanted to go to the toilet urgently.
Have you seen the scene in the toilet from Dumber and Dumber? Well, at least, the toilet did not clog.
I hurriedly left the cafe (I do not even remember if I greeted our friends) as I was sure that the second round would start soon.
As soon as I got home and as my partner explained to my mother what had happened, my mom continued to "ξεματιάζει", that is to drive the negative energy out of me, standing outside the bathroom door, while I was inside the bathroom suffering.
The truth is that while I was in the toilet I thought:"Μaybe my mom was right, someone had cursed us because it is not possible for so much to happen in 1 1/2 days".
But the scientist inside me said: "NO! these are just superstitions".
Second thought: "Maybe we should leave earlier, since things are not going well".
The optimist inside me: "Come on! Things will get better, all these were just random".
But Reality always laughs out loud in your face when you makes plan, it was certain that things wouldn't get better.
That was a vacation from hell. Things didn't get better. Thing got worse. But it's a long story and I will narrate the rest of our adventures in another post.
Note:
I should have listened to my pessimistic self. Oh, and my mom.
Always listen to your moms!
