Holiday. Everyone needs one. I feel I need it to come sooner for sure. And definitely a summer one. I wanna be at a beach, sunbathing, holding a nice, chill cocktail and enjoying the view of the big blue sea.

And I believe the universe owes me one, because last summer when my partner and I visited Creta, we had a lot of adventures, including buses breaking down in the middle of the road, lots of visits to hospitals (all, thankfully, for minor incidents) and a food poisoning that I will remember for a long, long time. So, I am ready to have my holiday, please...

So, talking about holiday movies in Twitter prompt and as usual I am going to bend a little the "rules" adding some favourite films about vacations, holidays (more or less).

1 Roman Holiday (1953)

Let's start with a classic. The princess Ann (Audrey Hepborn), who wants to take a break from her obligations and the tight schedule, escapes and spends a day free in Rome with the guidance of Gregory Peck. Although a simpleton romantic comedy, this film won 3 Oscars (Audrey Hepborn won one forr her role) and was the best advertisement for Rome. The scene in Colosseum always makes me think to book the next flight to Rome.

2 Mamma mia! Here we go again (2018)

And there can be no summer like the one in Greek islands (excuse me, I am a little prejudiced), so what can bring summer more close than a movie full of music and the famous Greek summer. Sunny days, deep blue sea, lots of kefi and music. (I am already on that yacht with my imagination).
Mamma mia! Here we go again (or part 2, if you prefer it that way) brings most of the characters of the previous movie, in the summer Greek island Kalokeri with the addition of Cher in the cast, as the grandmother of Sophie.

3 National Lampoon's European Vacation (1985)

Sometimes, though, you might want to go sightseeing and admire from close all these marvelous sights we read in the books or in the magazines. And if you are lucky enough, you might win a two weeks trip to Europe to visit England, France, Germany and Italy and get to learn the european way of life. That is if your family name isn't Griswald and you and your family aren't a constant moving disaster. Chevy Chase, Beverly D'Angelo and their family spread the panic all over Europe during their hilarious vacation.

4 Death on the Nile

Vacation means leaving your job behind and enjoying the sunny days and the pyramids in Egypt. Vacation means to be relaxed and not to have to think about anything. But when you are Hercule Poirot, murders don't stop during your trip and you might have to investigate the murders that happen on the boat you are on. And before you ask what might this have to do with vacation, just admire the arcahealogical places in the film, depicting ancient Egyptian monuments. The famous novel by Agatha Christie has been filmed many times, with most prominent the one in 1978 with Peter Ustinov in the role of Poirot, and lately in 2021, with Kenneth Branagh playing the Belgian detective. (IMO, I haven't seen yet the one in 2021, so I will vote for the one filmed in 1978)

5 Weekend at Bernie's (1989)

If the workload is heavy and you manage to escape just for a weekend, then don't go to your boss' house, especially if he is dead. Andrew McCarthy and Jonathan Silverman are the "lucky" employees that find Bernie (their boss) dead, lots of people that want to kill him and a house constantly full of people partying. This frenzying comedy, with black humor in every scene is bringing weekend trips to a next level. (even though one of the protagonists is a dead body).

And in the end, journeys and holidays apart from the fun often are meant to find a summer fling or a love with no response or your true love.

6 Eat, pray, love (2010)

Julia Roberts in this film finds herself in a journey that includes Italy, India and Indonesia, as she travels around the worls trying to learn things about life and true feelings. Even though I am not a great fan of this movie, I have to admit that the scenery included is magnificent and so is Javier Bardem, arising the desire to travel right away.

That's all, folks. In vacation, good things and bad things happen. But I am gonna hope for the good and now, I am gonna press publish and start packing for my holiday. I don't know where, I don't know how, but like Madonna I am gonna sing: "HOLIDAY"
