Grandma's Last Story
Grandma's Last Story
I remember perfectly that night, it was raining heavily and the sky was totally dark; that's how my grandmother began her story while I stared at her waiting to enjoy a fantastic story. My cousins and I enjoyed listening to those old stories but that night was a little different because my grandmother gathered us all together to tell us what she thought would be her last story because she was already very old.
I was anxious to hear that story and I just looked at my grandmother while she continued her story: I was walking through the woods looking for my dog Rocki who had lost his way, my parents told me that it was dangerous to go out at that hour in the rain but all I could think about was that Rocki was getting wet and I would have nowhere to spend the night.
Two hours later I was giving up because Rocki didn't show up so I decided to stay under a big tree while I looked everywhere. I called and called my dog but he didn't show up, I was so wet and cold. The forest started to look scary and my heart started to pound and I started to cry and cry non-stop.
My worried parents at home soon came out to look for me, I was lying under the tree scared and ashamed for not having listened to my parents. Hours passed and I woke up in my bed, dry and warm under my sheets but with a strong cough that did not let me speak. My mother made a remedy to soothe me and with the warmth of her arms I felt much better.
You wonder what happened to Rocki? Well, he came home the next day just as my parents had said he would. That day I understood that parents always want the best for us, that is why we must always obey them and not act disobediently as I did because they will end up alone and unprotected.
That is how my grandmother ended her story, my parents and I were a little thoughtful but happy to enjoy this new story. I took my things and returned home with my mother, during the whole night I was thinking about grandma's story and I understood that the grandmother had wanted to give us a life lesson and leave us a great learning experience.
The next day I woke up with a lot of spirit because I wanted to go to tell my grandmother that I understood her lesson and thank her for her incredible learning, but when I went downstairs I found my mother who was in the kitchen crying hugging my father. At that moment a cold chill ran through my body and I stood still for a few minutes without being able to react because I knew that something terrible had happened, I plucked up my courage and asked softly:
—Mom has something happened?
—My mother turned to me, took my hands and answered sadly, "Grandma has passed away.
—What? She looked fine last night, was my response to the hard news.
My mother hugged me tightly and my tears fell non-stop, we cried together for a while and then we went to Grandma's house to say goodbye. There my cousins were also saddened because they did not imagine that grandma was so sick, we are going to miss those nights full of adventure and magic that we lived through her stories.
My grandmother had made a great effort that night to tell us her last story and in this way give us a great lesson. She wanted to make sure with her last breath that we were obedient and showed respect to our parents. Those were very sad days for the family but I knew that my grandmother would be okay and now she will continue to tell her stories in heaven.
