La paciencia del pelícano

En mis visitas a la playa para ejercitarme, espacio que aprovecho para caminar o trotar, o para hacer ambas cosas en la arena, es usual que consiga imágenes extraordinarias que me gusta contemplar y fotografiar, como sucedió este día que pude disfrutar de la hermosa vista de estos pelícanos.

Mirarlos allí fue un momento de total regocijo, algunos de ellos quietos, flotando sobre el agua, dejándose llevar por la marea. Otro sobrevolaba un poco para luego posarse sobre un poste corroído en el agua.

During my visits to the beach to exercise—a place I use for walking or jogging, or both, on the sand—I often come across extraordinary scenes that I love to watch and photograph, as happened on this day when I was able to enjoy the beautiful sight of these pelicans.

Watching them there was a moment of pure joy; some of them were motionless, floating on the water, drifting with the tide. Another flew around a bit before landing on a weathered post in the water.

Allí estaban los pacientes pelícanos; ese fue el adjetivo que vino a mi mente mientras los veía. Ya había terminado de caminar y trotar, y al regresar no pude dejar de contemplarlo.

Pensé en la gran paciencia que tienen estos seres alados, esperando el momento justo para pescar; están allí en el hábitat acuático estudiando cada movimiento de los peces, aguardando para darse un buen banquete o para alzar el vuelo a su zona de descanso cuando llega el atardecer.

There they were, the patient pelicans; that was the adjective that came to mind as I watched them. I had already finished my walk and jog, and on my way back, I couldn’t help but gaze at them.

I thought about the great patience these winged creatures have as they wait for the right moment to fish; they’re there in their aquatic habitat, studying every movement of the fish, waiting to enjoy a hearty feast or to take flight to their roosting area when evening falls.

No es fácil ser paciente estos días; pesa no tener todas las respuestas del porqué pasan las cosas, pesa que no sobren los recursos para poder ayudar tanto como me gustaría, pesa sentirse de manos atadas ante el dolor que atraviesa mi nación. Así que observar a estos pacientes animales me recordó la importancia de luchar por recuperar la paciencia, porque en momentos en los que la situación escapa de nuestras manos, solo resta esperar ver tiempos mejores. Aplicar la paciencia estratégica del pelícano para lograr un objetivo ha de ser una meta por alcanzar.

Por algo dicen que la paciencia es una de las mayores virtudes, esa que nos lleva a mantener la calma y a tomar mejores decisiones.

It’s not easy to be patient these days; it’s hard not to have all the answers as to why things happen, it’s hard that there aren’t enough resources to help as much as I’d like, and it’s hard to feel powerless in the face of the pain my nation is going through. So watching these patient animals reminded me of the importance of striving to regain patience, because in moments when the situation is beyond our control, all we can do is wait for better times. Emulating the pelican’s strategic patience to achieve a goal should be something to strive for.
