This piece was brought back from China as a gift. These handcrafted stones are highly prized in the East and are often given to people regarded as true friends. They are beautiful, with designs that resemble landscapes.

I was told which region of China they came from, but I can’t remember its name. Their veining reminds me of traditional Sumi-e ink painting, and they are as beautiful as the country’s fine textiles.

Although elegant, this piece always makes people curious. When I arrived at the airport in Cuba, I and all my fellow travelers who were carrying one of these stones were stopped at immigration control. The authorities had detected a heavy, round object in our luggage. It was quite a headache, because we had to wait a long time while they searched everything. But without a doubt, it’s a piece that all of us who received one treasure.
