Roxana stretched her arms forward and relaxed her body against the chair. She was a bit bored, looking from the laptop screen to the microphone of the meeting theater, while listening to an older man on the other side of the video call ask her about the financial adjustment she had made for her project.

—Everything is already sorted out, I'll send it to you in an excel via Whatsapp —she said in a tired voice as if it were difficult for her to pronounce words normally.

—Well, now let's move on to planning the field work, we are behind schedule and short on time —said the man, looking toward the screen on his side with squinted eyes as if he couldn't see well.

—They haven't gotten the oil for the truck yet —Roxana blurted out and yawned.

The man on the other side of the screen remained silent for a few seconds and looked away while pressing his lips together. With a quick movement of his head, he turned back to Roxana, which startled her a bit and said:

—It is absurd that we have reached this month and that incompetent Zaylon hasn't managed the fuel for the truck.

Roxana's eyes widened so much upon hearing the project manager call the director incompetent that she felt somewhat uncomfortable and by instinct looked toward the entrance door of the theater: closed. She felt total relief remembering that no one was around, nor any cameras or microphones turned on.

—Well, I'm sure the director is doing everything possible to fix this hiccup, since he knows perfectly well how important this project is —she said, trying to calm the older man's anger, and when she tried to say goodbye to him because there were no more matters to discuss, the man blurted out an even more offensive insult:

—That idiot doesn't even know how to solve his personal problems, is he going to solve work ones?

Roxana's expression freezes. She doesn't know what to reply to the visibly upset project manager on the video call. Suddenly the conversation between them was abruptly cut off. At that precise moment, the theater door swung open and the director's secretary entered:

—Roxana —she said, but it sounded like a scolding or with a grave accusatory tone. —The microphone is on, the whole company has heard your video call conversation.

Roxana's expression turned even more terrified. "They weren't supposed to hear that." She looked at the project manager through the laptop, who was waiting patiently on the other side with a scowl, and she stood up to turn off the microphone, after leaving the machine on the seat.

—Now how do I fix this confusion? —Roxana asked the secretary, making a pitiful face. Would an apology solve it?

—An apology from him, of course —the secretary replied, pointing at the laptop where the project manager was still sitting with his arms crossed as if analyzing what had happened.

Roxana approached the chair again, imagining that the problem could become worse if the solution depended on the rude older man fixing it.
Without a better plan, she decided to confront the project manager and, with great eagerness, told him:

—Sir, you were my thesis advisor, you have watched me grow professionally, and I hope that at least you wish me success in the company.

The older man raised an eyebrow and his angry expression quickly transformed into one of absolute panic. His insults toward Director Zaylon were heard by everyone in the company, so Roxana assumed he wouldn't worry too much about his corporate situation since he was a rehired retiree, but he would worry about his pupil: her, to whom he was transmitting everything he knew. She simply ended up in the middle of all this commotion and they could even accuse her of being an accomplice in speaking ill of the director's character.

Roxana, for her part, is determined to resolve the misunderstanding she was wrapped up in and avoid being called to the Human Resources Department to be fired. She simply has to save her own skin because she cannot afford to be left without a good salary since life is very economically hard.

—I don't think you will have much success being guided by incompetents. I think you can go very far five years from now if they allow you to properly prepare yourself.

—This that you just said is completely true. If I make sure they allow me to grow properly I will go very far, so excuse me sir... —she said and slammed the laptop screen shut, leaving a sepulchral silence around her.

Well, now having the director's secretary as a witness to what she had just done, she prepared to tell the director that she was never part of the project manager's insults.
