The Trail of the Eternal Flame
The stone gates of the colosseum stood wide open for the long-awaited final day of the Tournament of the Eternal Flame, where the most skilled sorcerers in Praetoria tested their power before a crowd ever hungry for blood and spectacle. Esbat, muffled beneath a thick wool hood, did not advance toward the main entrance with the rest of the overflowing crowd. Like a seasoned pickpocket, he dodged a couple of guards drowsy from the heat and nimbly hopped over a metal fence to slip into the true heart of the place.
Beside the massive stadium walls stretched a chaotic maze of colorful canvas tents, merchant stalls, and dense spice smoke. If Esbat had learned one thing during his long travels as a wanderer, it was that during every major tournament, traveling fairs bloomed like weeds after rain; and all of them sank their true roots into the busiest betting house in the district. In Great Lowlands, that shelter was nothing more than a grim tavern built right into the colosseum’s foundations, where the muffled roar of the stands made the wooden ceiling rattle.
Behind the heavy bar, a Serpentine with shimmering golden scales commanded his staff through the sheer force of his hypnotic gaze.
"What'll be your poison, traveler?" he asked in a teasing, hissing tone as he saw the sorcerer approach the counter.
"What makes you think I'm from out of town?" Esbat replied, covertly counting the few worn coins in his pouch.
"That mysterious mark of Vega isn't common around these parts," the tavern keeper hissed, pointing a sharp claw at the mystical tattoo on his face. "You stink of the wild woods, and I doubt a tatterdemalion like you can afford a decent drink. Though... if you want a free bath, I can point you to where the horses drink."
The fury of the ancient forests still burned deep within Esbat, engraved in fire across the pages of his spellbook. He felt an irresistible urge to unleash an arcane spark that would reduce the bar to ashes, but he closed his eyes and took a deep breath. He evoked the scent of damp moss and the stillness of the thicket to quench the contempt the citizens of "civilized" towns so routinely offered him.
"You shouldn't speak to a customer like that. And even less so to a summoner," a serene voice chimed in from a few steps away.
The newcomer seemed to have emerged from the very shadows, wearing an imposing suit of armor etched with emerald runes that glowed with a soft, steady magical hue.
"Summonersss..." the innkeeper spat into the mug he was wiping with a filthy rag. "If he doesn't spend gold, he's no customer."
To Esbat's surprise, the stranger tossed a bulging leather pouch onto the worn wood.
"Then let's have two of your finest beers," he cheerfully ordered the snake-man, who reluctantly slithered toward the nearby casks. "We haven't been properly introduced. I'm Buns."
The name echoed in Esbat's memory like an ancient legend among travelers. That man, looking every bit like an erudite wanderer, exuded absolute confidence.
"I'm Esbat. And tell me... besides buying drinks for strangers, how did you know I was a summoner?"
Buns let out a booming laugh.
"On the final day of the Tournament of the Flame, only a true summoner would seek refuge at a bar instead of being spellbound by the arena."
Esbat cast his eyes down at the damp wood.
"Actually... I came to bet everything on Nessa."
The confession sparked another burst of laughter from Buns, who gave him a warm pat on the shoulder.
"Betting? My friend, you are utterly lost. What you need is a real adventure," he said, unfurling a worn parchment scroll across the bar. "We don't need maps when our path is clear. Come with me... our journey is just beginning."
