Sitting in this
sidewalk cafe on
some charming,
cobbled street
that I’ve never
been to before
and will likely
never see again.
I try to soak it all in,
and pray that
these memories
will revisit me for
the rest of my days,
hopefully as
I’m doing the most
mundane of things.
I want to remember
how that mist clung
to those clovered hills,
how you squinted as
the golden light
bathed your face,
how damn delicious
the bitter foam
of the inky black
coffee tasted,
in contrast to the
buttery sweetness
of this scone.
Already, I feel
the butterflies
in my stomach
and smile
nervously
as I think,
we have ten
days here,
because we know
just how quickly
this time will march.
Before we know it,
we’ll be calling the cab,
rushing to the airport,
and then trying our best to spot
our Airbnb from the foggy
window of our plane,
shortly after liftoff.
For now, I’ll relish each
of these moments
as they fade to memory and
roam around freely in
the wonder of this
melancholy dream.
Our life and all its worries
are all there waiting
just across the sea
but right now we have
nowhere to be…
nowhere to be.
