my little trolls are out enjoying halloween. this is the only night they are allowed to mingle with those ugly naive human kids because when everyone is all dressed up in costumes nobody can tell that they are really trolls. they roam around smashing pumpkins and spooking all the innocent little tots out trick or treating. i am so proud of them for scaring the daylights out of those fraidy-cat suckers who drop their stash of treats and run home crying to mommy. you wouldn't believe how much they hoard in just one night. but it gets cold out there so i make sure to have some nice hot troll soup for my handsome little darlings when they get home.
they love it so much i thought i would share the recipe for all my wicked kin out there on hive and anybody else.
troll soup ingredients
1 small pumpkin
1 red onion
5 cloves garlic
3 Tbsp butter
1 Tbsp oil
1 tsp kashmiri chili powder
1 tsp black pepper
2 tsp salt
1 tsp thyme
1 liter boiling water
1 bullion cube, veg or chicken
garnish
2 Tbsp cream
2 boiled eggs
a few pitted black olives
2 Tbsp pumpkin seeds
kashmiri chili powder
a few cloves or peppercorns
procedure
peel pumpkin, remove seeds and chop into cubes
finely chop the onion and garlic
melt the butter with the oil. add the chili powder and pepper and let them infuse for about a minute over medium heat. the kashmiri chili is not overly pungent but adds great aroma and color.
add the onion, garlic, salt and thyme. saute for a few minutes. i'm not in a hurry, my sweet little ones won't be home for a while yet.
stir in the pumpkin cubes and saute for a few more minutes
pour in the boiling water, crush the bouillon cube and stir it in. cook until pumpkin is soft.
meanwhile dry roast the pumpkin seeds in a skillet and boil the eggs
cut the olives into halves. save some as halves and thinly slice the others lengthwise
when the pumpkin is cooked blend it smooth. i use an immersion blender but any other method is fine. strain it, there will likely be small onion bits left over.
pour the soup into a serving bowl to decorate it. using a cake decorator with a thin spout make a spiderweb design with the cream. or pour the cream into a small clear plastic bag and cut a tiny hole in one corner to squeeze out the cream. then place a half olive as a spider's body and the slices as legs. you might need a toothpick to help place the legs properly.
to make the ghosts cut the boiled eggs in half and remove the yolks. for this i use only the whites. make a small slit for the mouth and eyes. fill the eyes with a clove or a peppercorn and for the mouth a bit of black olive. place the ghosts along with the spiders on the web.
spread a little chili powder for a nice creepy effect and toss the pumpkin seeds around the edges
if you are serving humans this pumpkin soup is now ready
but for real troll soup you need a genuine troll's oven
my dear little angels came home just now, happy and rowdy but cold and hungrier than ever. they are so sweet and i am so proud of them, coming just in time for this special halloween treat
