At school, Nkechi’s first step was accomplished with affectionate greeting by both her juniors and her colleagues. It’s obvious that she’s loved by everyone in the school. Nkechi greeted them all. In Nmokoro high school, things seems cranky, boys who are to be neatly dressed in their white shirt with a black long tie, and a black trouser with a black sandal, dressed out of code, some had chains in their trouser, some put on big canvas while most are without tie.
Nkechi walked straight to her classroom (J.S.S 3A). She met Gift, her best friend discussing with Ifeanyi (the class rep.) “Eeeeeeehhh my friend” Gift shouted as she ran towards Nkechi to hug her.
“Nkechi, I have missed you”
“Me too”
“So what did you bring for me from Lagos?”
“I bought you a wrist watch” they chatted
Nkechi had travel to Lagos to spend the holiday with her aunty, Aunty Sareme, a rich business woman who lived happily with her husband and blessed with two children. She has been the one supporting Nkechi’s mother in her finances since the death of her husband. She had already decided to take Nkechi with with her but her mother refused because Nkechi was her only child.
Five minutes after, Onu Tochukwu (the time keeper) popularly called Tochi rang the bell for assembly. The students were scanty. Loveth and Chidimma (the assembly prefects) came out to lead the assembly into praise and worship as Nkechi and Micheal (the health perfect) stood at the back of back of the students. After 20 minutes of praise and worship, Mr. Victor Ogheneghare (the principal) aka “the cane”, came out. He was well known for his vigorous beating, never try to commit and offence that will take you to the principal office, the students do call his office “hell on earth”. The principal advises the students to always be a good conduct and advised the out-going students to put more effort in their academic aspect and to prepare for their forth coming external examination (WASSCE). The students sang the marching song as they disengaged the assembly for their various classes
Emeka (the head boy) and Nkechi were discussing as Tochi interrupted “hmm, hmm, hmm, the principal said he want to see all the perfect” he said as he smile. They all stood and marched to the principal office.
