Lighting can affect our psychology and plays a great role to our mood. It can improve or disrupt our overall wellbeing as well as affect our sleep. How much emphasis do you give on proper lighting at your home?
Personally a lot! When I wake up, the first thing I do is to raise the blinds and let the sunlight fill the house and flood every room. This is the best way to start your day. It is revitalising. It boosts your brain and sets it ready for the day.
I've been to homes where they hardly ever let the sunlight in and the whole atmosphere feels sick and depressive. Unless you're a vampire I see no reason for doing that. The natural light gives a sense of "health" in the house. It brightens your mood and creates a feeling of euphoria. Doesn't sound bad does it?
During the day it's easy. In the morning you let the sunlight in, at noon you may want to filter the amount of light you want in, but what happens in the afternoon or at night when you have zero natural light? You have to create the atmosphere you want on your own.
What we should not use in our house is the what I call "doctor's office lighting" -aka white light. I don't get its use even in doctor's office since I find it really annoying. The white light makes you more energetic and blue light specifically, suppresses melatonin levels. In a few words it's not the right lighting to relax in your sofa while drinking your tea.
Yellow lighting on the other hand is what you want in your house. Warm light in the evening can help improve mental health as it increases the secretion of melatonin, which leads to better sleep at night and overall mental wellbeing.
Additionally, if you want bring a sense of coziness in your home, make sure you have multiple sources of light such as floor lamps, table lamps as well as wall lights. That will give you plenty of options for different moods and settings. You can play around with the combinations until you find the perfect setting for every occasion..
I love playing with light. Even though I'm not a romantic type of person at all, I enjoy more than anything the warm glow of a candle.. Remember that lamps are not just there to provide light but to create a soothing and inviting feel. Light is a critical element in creating a calm and cozy atmosphere..
