More than two months passed during which I had neither the time nor the inclination to write.

Pasaron más de dos meses en los que no tuve ni tiempo ni ánimo para escribir.
On June 24th, we had a double earthquake. It was the anniversary of the Battle of Carabobo, and many people were honoring the figure of Saint John the Baptist with dances and music. There was usually a military parade in a monument park, which almost always took place in the rain. This year was another exception.
El 24 de junio tuvimos un terremoto doble. Se celebraba el aniversario de la batalla de Carabobo y mucha gente honraba con bailes y música la figura que representa a San Juan Bautista. Solía haber un desfile militar en un parque monumento que casi siempre se hacía bajo la lluvia. Este año fue otra excepción.
Although I couldn't make any special plans, I tried to enjoy the day at home by breaking out of my routine a bit. It started like any other Wednesday, since one of my children went to work and the cleaning lady who comes to help Mom arrived. Mom had the idea to go out alone to buy floor wax at a nearby store. She had done it before, so we thought it wouldn't be a problem, and besides, none of us had time to get ready to go with her.
Aunque no pude hacer planes para actividades especiales, traté de disfrutar del día en casa saliendo un poco de la rutina. Sin embargo comenzó como un miércoles ordinario ya que uno de mis hijos fue a trabajar y la muchacha que viene a ayudar a mamá a hacer la limpieza vino. A mamá se le ocurrió la idea de salir sola a comprar cera para pisos en un local comercial cercano. Otras veces lo había hecho por lo que creímos no habría problema, además ninguno de nosotros tuvo tiempo de arreglarse para acompañarla.
Shortly after we were notified of her departure, a neighbor arrived and told us that Mom had fallen, and my eldest son immediately went to her aid. Later, we learned that my niece's husband had taken them to a health center for an X-ray. This revealed a fractured humerus that required surgery. What followed was a month of watching my sisters and niece rush around with Mom, getting her tests done and, after the operation, making sure she rested, as she still is today.
Al poco tiempo de ser avisada de su salida llegó un vecino notificándonos que mamá se había caído y mi hijo mayor salió en seguida en su ayuda. Después supimos que habían sido llevados por el marido de mi sobrina a un centro de salud para que le practicaran una radiografía. Esta reveló que presentaba fractura de húmero que requería cirugía. Lo que siguió después fue un mes de ver a mis hermanas y sobrina correr con mamá de un lado a otro, haciéndole exámenes y, después de la operación, cuidar que guardara reposo, como aun está en la actualidad.
Meanwhile, we continued to follow the news about the earthquake's effects in the hardest-hit areas. It was devastating, and the death toll has already surpassed 6,000, with many more still missing and others displaced. I thank God that, although it was felt very strongly where we live, we only suffered some falling objects, a broken picture frame, and the appearance and widening of some cracks in the garage floor and ceiling.
Mientras tanto seguíamos atentos a las noticias de los efectos del terremoto en las zonas más afectadas. Fue devastador y ya se cuentan más de 6000 personas fallecidas, además muchas siguen desaparecidas y otras damnificadas. Doy gracias a Dios de que, aunque se sintió muy fuerte donde vivimos, sólo sufrimos caídas de objetos, la rotura de un portarretratos y la aparición y aumento de tamaño de algunas grietas en el piso y techo del garaje.
I'm also grateful that almost all of us were home together. Only my oldest son was out, but nearby, and we had just finished a video call with my daughter and nephew, who live abroad. Mom is recovering well despite her age and the fact that screws and metal plates were inserted to restore proper function to her right arm.
También agradezco el que estábamos casi todos juntos en casa. Sólo mi hijo mayor se encontraba afuera, pero cerca, además acabábamos de conversar por videollamada con mi hija y mi sobrino, que viven fuera del país. Mamá se recupera satisfactoriamente a pesar de su edad y de que le fueron colocados tornillos y placas metálicas para restablecer el buen funcionamiento de su brazo derecho.
