Hello beautiful community of Hive and Insects of the world.
In my land, amaranth is easily produced both in the lawn when it has not been cut for a long time, as well as on sidewalks, roadsides and abandoned buildings.
There is a town near here called "Pirapira" whose name comes from the abundance of the "Pira", which is how the indigenous people called the plant, which is very abundant and used as food.

After we read that it is a superfood and has medicinal properties, we began to pay more attention to it, and let one of the plants grow in a corner of the house.
To my surprise, when I went to see it closely one morning, I found that its leaves were full of holes and occupied by two ladybugs.

The same day of the discovery it rained, then I went back to look for them and they were not there, perhaps they fled from the downpour towards another plant or garden.

The identification app helped me find out its name: Coccinella transversalis.
It is a beetle of the Cochinellidae family, genus Cochinella, the most common among ladybugs.
They are native to Asia and Australia and may have been introduced here accidentally or for pest control, since farmers take advantage of them that feed on aphids and fungi, pests of some crops.

They are about 6 millimeters wide by 5 millimeters long, with a black head and bright red elytra with two black markings each and a black line between them. The pronotum is black with white markings on each side.

While one was motionless, the other constantly walked through branches and leaves and quickened her pace as I approached to photograph her.

There is another very similar American species, but a little larger and with which it should not be confused, the Cochinella transversogutata.

"The species is declining throughout its range, perhaps due to competition from introduced species such as the seven-spot ladybird (Coccinella septempunctata), a widespread species in Europe and North America and also called ladybird transversalis." Source.

Fuente.
