The story I am going to tell happened with a neighbor when I lived in my parents' house. The year was 2011, I had just finished school, and I wasn't working yet. During that time, I witnessed several events in this neighbor's house, and her name was Luzinete.
Luzinete had just lost her husband. Before, she was a vibrant and full-of-life woman, but she fell into a state of depression. To try to distance herself from the memories she shared with her late husband, she sold her house and bought another one, which was in front of my parents' house.
As she lived alone and her children had already married or moved out, she took care of abandoned animals from the streets, claiming that these little creatures helped her find the strength to keep on living. My mother would often visit her, and they would talk a lot. In one of their conversations, she admitted that she had attempted suicide, but seeing those little animals she cared for, alone and with no one to feed them, made her reconsider.
Initially, there were only a few cats and dogs, but as she fed them on the street and at her doorstep, more animals appeared. She started sheltering some dogs and cats, which were in deplorable conditions, in her own house. This caused her house to always have a bad smell.
She was a very kind lady, especially with animals. She always carried pet food in her bag and made a point to feed stray dogs or cats she encountered on the streets. However, over time, all of this became bothersome, as her doorstep was always crowded with these animals.
At night, the dogs wouldn't stop barking, and on other nights, there were fights among them. Sometimes, a motorcyclist or cyclist would pass by, and the dogs would chase after these people. There were nights when Luzinete would throw pet food on the neighborhood's rooftops so that stray cats could eat. However, these actions led to more cats showing up, resulting in feline fights and damage to the rooftops.
I remember that our family and the neighborhood could no longer tolerate the situation. So, some neighbors joined forces and reported Luzinete to the City Hall, which took measures against her. One of them was to prohibit her from sheltering so many animals in her house because it had become uninhabitable.
I don't remember exactly, but she stopped bringing the dogs inside her house. Many dogs were collected by the city authorities. Then, Luzinete found herself alone without her four-legged companions. And it didn't take long for her to commit suicide.
As she lived alone, the exact moment of her death is unknown, but on the day she died, some of the animals she cared for gathered at her doorstep. The dogs barked in a strange way, unlike anything seen before. After almost two days without seeing Luzinete, neighbors broke into her house and found her; her body already had a foul smell.
The police arrived at the scene along with the fire department to remove her from the hanging rope. There was a large crowd of curious people in the street that day.
On the day of her burial, I remember some dogs staying outside her house. When the coffin left for the cemetery, some of the dogs that were there began to follow. Some neighbors regretted making the report, thinking that she might still be alive if they hadn't. However, what startled the neighborhood was that on the night she was buried, many heard her voice calling her favorite dogs, "Pretinha and Marron," several times. There were dog barks, and there were several cats on the rooftops. The next morning, there was pet food scattered at the neighbors' doors where she used to leave it.
Perhaps her spirit was not at peace because her mission was to feed and care for these poor animals, and now there was no one else to do it. For a long time, strange noises could be heard from the late Luzinete's house during the night, and the dogs still slept in front of her door.
This was my participation in the Hive Learners Community challenge: Tell Us a Story. I hope you enjoyed my entry!
Alguns vizinhos estavam arrependidos por ter feito a den煤ncia, pois caso contr谩ria talvez ela ainda estivesse viva.
