Don't you feel that Christmas feels different lately? Do you feel that a loved one is missing? Or do you no longer get together like you used to? And, as a final question, what does nostalgia mean to you?

Well, I do. Let me give you some context: I come from a large family on my mother's side. Before, in my house, we were, so to speak, four groups in one house.

1.Mis abuelos:Mercedes (La Mami) y Gilberto (El Coco)

1.My grandparents: Mercedes (La Mami) and Gilberto (El Coco)

They mean everything to me. I remember that every time I came home from preschool, my grandmother would welcome me with Maria cookies and coffee with milk, or sometimes she would make me peanuts with boiled plantains. I would sit in the dining room while she sewed on her machines and I would tell her about my day.

On weekends, since I woke up very early and my parents were still sleeping, my grandfather would make me delicious empanadas. Then I would stay with them in their room watching the 8 a.m. soap opera until everyone else in the house woke up.

2.Mi tía Yanne, mis primos Frank y Brayan

2.My aunt Yanne, my cousins Frank and Brayan

At that time, they were some of my younger cousins. I used to fight with Brayan, since he was closest to my age (we are three years apart), while Frank was the oldest of them (we are five years apart) and I used to spend time in his room watching television.

My aunt is the second best baker I know (the first is my mom). I remember that she was always making spectacular cakes, and she made every birthday cake.

3. My Aunt Fatima, my cousins Stephanie (Teti) and Ayrtom (Tito)

I don't remember much about my aunt Fatima, I just know that she worked a lot and came home at night. Sometimes I would hide in her room to scare her when she arrived.

They are my older cousins: Tito is 10 years older than me and Teti is 8 years older. Do I remember anything about them? Of course I do!

Tito is my favorite cousin, my brother. Although he was very stubborn and drove everyone crazy, he always played with me, because to be honest, at that age I was unbearable, and he played with me whenever he could. In the mornings, I always waited for him to wake up so I could say hello, and at night I couldn't sleep without him. I love my whole family, but I love him three times as much.

I also saw Teti as a sister, only a little different. She is the complete opposite of my older sister: she likes to go out partying, she took forever to get ready, she had a million Barbies and all the makeup you could imagine. Do you know the theory that there is always one purple person and one pink person? It doesn't matter if they are family or friends, it's always like that. In their case, my cousin was the pink one and my sister was the purple one.

4. Nosotros: Mi Mamá Yamileth, mi papá Junior, mi Hermana mayor Yamely, mi Perra negra y yo.

4. Us: My mom Yamileth, my dad Junior, my older sister Yamely, my black dog, and me.

At that time, there were only four of us (five with my pet). My parents worked, so I spent my time with my grandparents and cousins at home. My older sister, who is eight years older than me, went to the same school as my cousins. As you may have guessed, I was the youngest of them all.

My sister Yamely, my cocolazón's sister, I could tell you many things about her, starting with the fact that she has been my inspiration since we were little. We used to fight ALL THE TIME over any little thing, really. Although now that I think about it, I didn't care about half the things we fought about; I just liked to annoy her. Describe her? She is the most intelligent, strong, and beautiful woman I have ever known. She's affectionate in her own way, she doesn't like physical contact, which I haven't given much thought to because I've always been glued to her. I hug her all the time, and she can scream at me to let go, but I'm not going to, HAHAHAHA! (My favorite thing in the world is to annoy her, ever since I can remember).

She has a beautiful heart, and thanks to her, I have discovered things that I love, such as my favorite hobbies: reading and painting. Ever since I was little, I have loved how she draws and the ease with which she expresses her artistic side. I also grew up knowing that she loves to read. The first book I ever read was hers, and she showed me more and more until it became one of my favorite things. Needless to say, I am very attached to my sister and, honestly, I refuse to let her go. And I don't mean hugs, but emotionally.

Time is running out. I know that at some point she will leave home and take a different path, like the others, where we will no longer sleep in the same room, or see each other every day, or laugh in the early hours of the morning, trying not to make too much noise so we don't get told off. But what am I going to do without her? That's a question I ask myself constantly, and to be honest, I'm not ready for the answer. No one prepares you to cling so tightly to a person and then not want to let go.

Getting back to the point, we all lived together and, as you can imagine, Christmas was AMAZING: lots of presents, lots of food, the house smelled of spices, and, above all, there was laughter everywhere. My other two cousins came with my aunt and uncle (my aunt July, my uncle Johnny, and my cousins Omar and Jhon), and we all spent the holidays together. While the adults enjoyed themselves and talked, we played and watched television, waiting for the arrival of the Baby Jesus. Sometimes we would see the gifts right there and do Secret Santa exchanges. Other times, I would always fall asleep before everyone else, and when I woke up, the tree was full of gifts, toys were everywhere in the living room, and I would open them with my cousins while everyone watched us.

It was like that for many years, but little by little we all grew up, the family took different paths, and the house gradually emptied. First my aunt Fatima left, then my other cousins (Omar and John) stopped coming, then my aunt Yanne left, and finally my grandparents.

Those were very difficult years. Being used to having my cousins in the house all the time, listening to them fight, playing with them, and then suddenly they were gone... It's a void that no matter how hard you try, you can never fill.

After a few years, my younger sisters Nataly and Angeles (the youngest of the four) arrived, and although we still celebrate the holidays, it's not the same. From being 16 people laughing and enjoying ourselves, we became seven members of the household until, two years ago, my dog died, and we became six.

I know my parents try hard to make sure we all enjoy Christmas, and it really is fun, but it's not the same as before.

This Christmas we have three more members: my pet Parker, the family dog Apolo, and a kitten
Duquesa.

What is Nostalgia?
o, what is nostalgia for you?

For me, it's the absence of someone who was once in your life and simply can't be there anymore; it's the lack of something your heart longs for, but can no longer have.

In my case, it's Christmas as it used to be, the warmth of a home that is now completely cold, the memory of laughter that has now been replaced by deafening silence, moments that are now just memories.

Community, this post is longer than I usually publish, but I wanted to share another little piece of myself with you, a little reflection I had around this time of year.

🎄✨I hope you all have a happy Christmas with your loved ones!🫶🏻✨ See you later, community!
