This past weekend was the traditional blast. We gathered from our lovely individual homes in Cape town, Kwa Zulu Natal, Johannesburg, and even as far as the neighbouring country of Eswatini to party together as a family that missed so very much during the two covid shutdown years.

During that time, we had milestone birthdays of 40, 50, 60, and 75 but the greatest was a 90. We even had a 50-year wedding Anniversary.

On the one hand, we saved huge amounts of money in costs for individual parties that should have taken place but in the end, what a great and wonderful time we all had meeting up with each other after so long.

On the other hand, no one had their own special event which would have been great as well. Three days of laughter and sharing of special moments and memories is quite incredible and I think that family is such a precious thing. I really try to keep close contact as possible with everyone. Perhaps I am a natural party animal but hey, what’s wrong with that?

We were on a private beach which displayed a sign saying ‘Beware of Rip Tides’. Do we ever read signs? I know that I don’t, and I hadn’t seen that sign and although the weather was overcast and windy. I was not going home without my toes having seen the sea, so in I went by sliding down a high sand bank that had been cut out by the strong waves. Makes you think a bit in hindsight; however, I laughed so much as the wind blew and the waves came at me quite furiously on and off.

One minute you’re in a huge wave and almost immediately you’re far from it, the sudden drawback of the sea is fast. It’s hard to recognize when you’re in the water but looking back from above it is quite scary.

In the distance, I could hear people shouting but didn’t quite get the urgency of my husband’s voice and others, shouting, ‘be careful of the rip tide’. The bank was high and trying to climb out was equally as funny as I kept sliding back to the ever-increasing high waves but with the help of others, I made it out.

Recently people have been washed out to sea and not recovered so perhaps that was a little silly but luckily, I had fun, and all was well. However, it is a good warning to be more careful when playing with, or in, mother sea. Just please take great care when swimming in the Ocean.
